Ahem, that I pointed out with GH and TH! LolRyaNtheSlayA wrote:No, the general market needs to stop buying them. They will. Games, like fashion, have certain things that are "in". Eventually they become "out" and new things will replace them. Do I have to point out the platforming mascots or the five billion fighters in the 90s? Or Space Invaders and the clones that followed? Or as MrPopo pointed out Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero?Menegrothx wrote: So the people who dont buy these games in the first place need to stop buying these games or they dont have a right to criticize the fact that these games dominate the market, and they also need to stop whining about those people who buy them?
You do have the right to criticize the games industry. I'm all for it. I don't really like the fact that FPS games are the cool thing right now. To whine about it like it's the only type of game on the shelves anymore is just plain dumb though. Most of the people that are "tired" of the industry's current state can't look beyond the tip of their nose. There are tons, and tons, and tons of games coming out for everybody except maybe the visual novel and point n click enthusiast.
I don't really think all that many people are really tired of the industry though. This is a retro gaming forum. A retro
gaming forum filled with a bunch of retro gamers likely fueled by strong nostalgia and arrogance.

Its not just the retro gamers who I have seen complaining about the quality of games lately. Regular guys and gamers, from people in their early 20s to 40 plus crowd. And itts not just the FPS games, many people feel that (mainstream) games arent fun anymore, that they lack that certain soul or appeal that games from previous era(s), even the ones they did not play back when they were new, had. And the fact that there seems to be a lack of new ideas and a lot of rehashing isnt just limited to military shooters, it affects many genres.RyaNtheSlayA wrote: I don't really think all that many people are really tired of the industry though. .
Its partially caused by what I said in my other thread - as physical releases are becoming increasingly obsolete, its the middle sized game companies that are hurting these days. Indy games are doing great, but its the fact that relatively small and unknown game companies could make innovative new titles that were still commercially succesfull and mainstream what many people miss from the 1990s. Sure if you dig deep enough on the internet, you will find some flash game on Newgrounds that is totally awesome.

...and the same thing happens with basically every other form of stimulating media.
It's not the games, it's the (older) gamers. It's just how your brain works, apparently (#7 in this for example).
There are plenty of people have lots of fun with current games.

I disagree. There are still many great and original games coming out these days like Borderlands, the Batman Arkham series, and the Mass Effect series.

It used to be cool to hate on things that are popular. It's not anymore, but now it's the retro thing to do.

I actually thought I had already replied to this thread, then I realized there was an almost identical thread made a few months ago. I can't track it down, but in it I replied with stats for the top games of NES/SNES/360/PS3, and it was instantly obvious that the top selling games in the older generations were almost all new ideas, while the vast majority of the current gen are sequels or spin-offs.
