If you want classic sports stuff then get a snes or nes because sports games are really cheap. Just keep in mind that if your going to get rpg's for the snes then your going to spend a few bucks. Take my route, agter a while you tend to get bored with just playing the 8 bit and 16 bit classics.It may take a month or two but it happens.
Go with the ps2. The games are everywhere. Your friends may even has some to give to you. If you go to gamestop they still have games. walmart, target, They still have games.
Go to gamestop.com and there are 1800 titles and accesories to choose from. 40 are puzzle games catagory. That is your best bet. Get a ps2

I was actually thinking n64, it has a lot of sports/racing games and some japanese puzzle games. The system itself is pretty cheap and can be found just about anywhere and the (sports) games can be had very cheap as well. May not be the most beautiful console graphically but it has some pretty good games and lots to choose from.

Way more Japanese puzzle games on just about every other popular system. Same with sports/racing games. I'm just saying...
