console recommendations
I use to own a NES many years back, so I will likely not make that my first choice. I'm leaning towards a PS, but that's up in the air. Here's my interests...
-puzzle and sports games especially
-classic games ('80s, Ms. Pac Man, Mario, etc.)
-low cost system with little if any add-ons
Thank you in advance!

OH NO! not one of these threads!
but like moths to a flame we answer anyways!
Go ahead and get the ps1 its gonna be the cheapest of the late 90's consoles.
You can get the namco museum collections to get your fill of classic games. Theres also the Activision classics compillation and the Williams/Atari Collections too.
Sports games are pennies on the PS1 too. Get your fill of maddens, Gamedays and others for very little.
Tetrises and other Puzzle games are also available for PS too. Go and find Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo. Its one of the best puzzlers for the PS1 (in my opinion)
You have lots of choices so have fun while your deciding.

Re: console recommendations
I would have to say Genesis, no need to get the CD unit. Or a Sega Saturn,Sega Master System would be a good pick too.
Re: console recommendations
If you're leaning towards a PS1, get a PS2 and enjoy both libraries. Personally I'd say the NES and SNES are the best consoles to collect for.

or a Dreamcast.
Re: console recommendations
Keep in mind that Genesis is very inexpensive to collect for. Even the most popular titles seldom go for more than $20, whereas collecting for SNES or PS1 can become very pricey when looking for the sought after games.
I agree with o.pwuaioc about the PS2 though. If you're leaning towards a PS1, may as well just get a PS2. Not a very large price difference.

Not to mention CIB Genesis games are very cheap as well (since they aren't cardboard). I've seen overstock on complete sports games many times in stores. They are a dime a dozen.

This. I'd say go for the Genesis; you will get more enjoyment out of your money's worth.
