PAL games will work but obviously may have speed differences.
Jap carts are long and slender like Atari carts and will not fit in the US system. This is because the Master System was originally the Sega Mark III in Japan; even when it got redesigned and renamed to Sega Master System they kept the same cart shape.

Correct. As long as it is a grid style cart is should work. So US, Brazilian, Euro, and Australian carts should all work fine. My Euro Power Strike is exactly the same as my US one other than the cover. My Aussie Power Strike II also works fine as well.

I got the AV cable and the sound is good now. I also picked up a copy of Rastan.

Edit: I can't get Rastan to work. Even after cleaning it with windex. I appears that some on the connectors on both sides are missing. Pics

Is this normal? I really want to play this game too

Some carts don't have all of the pins as they're not always all needed. Windex is not a good choice to clean carts as it contains perfume and blue dye that will be left behind, so the cart isn't really clean. Have another go with alcohol dampened q-tips.

SMS compatibility is complicated. Many games of the western shape will play anywhere they fit. Though a few titles are best played on US (for full 60hz speed), PAL (glitchy in 60hz), Japan (FM sound), or even Brazil machines (weird mappers like Street Fighter II).

IIRC certain PAL carts and Japan cards will play on a US Genesis with converter yet not a real US SMS1. Very difficult to run everything in its ideal form...

Interestingly the bulky first PBC does fit Sega CDX. Unlike Genesis 2, as everyone knows.

Still wouldn't work. I took it back to the store and exchanged it for Strider on NES.

I ordered Hang on & Safari hunt and it came today. I briefly played Hang On, but I really wanted to play Safari Hunt to try out the phaser. It doesn't work very well. I can hit targets but its very intermittent. Is there a fix for it?

Maybe the lens is dirty on the phaser? And just to be certain, you are playing on a CRT, not plasma or LCD right?

It is quite dirty... How would I clean it?

Edit: I am playing on a CRT TV.

Check if all of the screws are accessible on the phaser. If so, open it up, pop out the lens and use a glasses cleaning, microfiber, or at least soft cloth to clean it. Just check if the lens is different on one side so you put it back the way it was.
