Anyone on the planet could pull it off with enough time and money. There's nothing impressive about it.
It takes more than time and money. You have to have the dedication too. Not every game is easy to find sealed, in the original black label edition. Some games take hours of searching fruitlessly to find. A collection like that takes a lot of dedication.
These are PlayStation 2 games we're talking about. I.E. that one slightly old game system that is still being manufactured and supported by indy hardware company Sony and niche retail outlets like Wal-Mart. The vast majority of all PS2 games are still available new and sealed from about a billion retailers. The amount of dedication involved might require searching eBay for the odd title that is not available on Amazon. That's nice than he and you think his collection is awesome. And it is kinda cool, if I am being honest. But it's not a collecting accomplishment, it's a money-to-burn accomplishment. It's not that I think he is a bad person somehow for doing this, but I'm not going to be impressed by his discipline or something.

I do not think there is a single sealed PS2 game that will take you an hour to find on the internet. Not one.

Oh, come on. Just because the PS2 was super popular, and most of it's games are easy to find doesn't mean that a handful of them won't be hard to get. Some games just got really limited releases, or got plowed under by more popular games. Besides, if you read the article posted by the OP, you'll see that the collector did have a really hard time finding one of his games, some Moto game.

Another thing I found silly. If it was a sealed collection of 2600 games, now that would be a feat. Still silly, but definitely a feat. A sealed PS2 collection is nothing to get excited about. Amazon can probably supply you with 80% of the stuff you need, if not more.

well while that is true that Amazon probably has sealed copies for 80% of the games.. i dare you find sealed copies of some of the hard to find stuff

and like said in the interview, there were some criteria (like unbroken seals, first release etc) which makes it harder

and a wise sealed collector once told me: "a stamp collector isn't laughed at because he isn't using the stamps to send mail, a coin collector isn't shunned because he doesnt buy stuff from his coins, so why should a game collector open and play his games?"

This.

If he enjoys it, who are you to tell him that he is wrong? Sssh.*

brunoafh wrote:The point is that that guy's collection is god damned ridiculous. Those games were pressed to be played, not to be thrown on a shelf for no good reason. I admit that I have a bit of the collector mentality going on, but stuff like this just makes me laugh to myself. Every one of those sealed copies he has could be getting perfectly good play time by someone like you or I. Instead they're just sitting in shrink wrap collecting dust so some guy can get some bizarre sense of satisfaction and be like "yeah... I'm awesome" every time he passes by his meaningless shelf of hoarded PS2 games.

edit: It's just the principal of it. I know it's not going to have any actual repercussions on gamers, but it's just so stupid.
It's as logical as any other collecting pursuit. I mean, thirty years ago if someone had told me they're collecting comics to leave in mint condition, unread, I'd have called them nuts. Now, I just call them smart. Now, what'd be funny is, if he did eventually open up the games to discover they're just empty boxes.

I dunno, coin and stamp collectors are kinda weird...

But on the other hand, you don't need to open games in order to play them.

Okay, so there are a small number that would be hard to find. But still his story of the difficulty finding MotoGP sealed amounted to "I looked for it on eBay a lot and then this one time is was on eBay". Like I said, I don't think he's a bad person, more power to him. It just isn't that impressive to me as a collector to just scour eBay for what you want and then buy it.
and a wise sealed collector once told me: "a stamp collector isn't laughed at because he isn't using the stamps to send mail, a coin collector isn't shunned because he doesnt buy stuff from his coins, so why should a game collector open and play his games?"
The difference, to me at least, is that stamps and coins and baseball cards and things of that nature can still be viewed and enjoyed for their aesthetic qualities. The beauty of a rare coin can still be appreciated through plastic and polymer. Sealed games can't, unless you're really into cover art I guess. And no, I don't understand collecting sealed and graded comic books either. It's just not something I can get pleasure from.
