That would explain why I've been loving Wario Land 4 so much so far, it's one of the best 2D platformers I've ever played, and it does all of those things really well. The reason I never liked GTA is probably the Fantasy and the Place, both seem really off to me. I think Katamari Damacy is pretty close to "pure gameplay" in a sense. I think what made it fun was the momentum of the pacing. You start out little and can't pick up much, but as you play the size of the Katamari increases and therefore the amount you can pick up increases and so on and so on...
The great visuals standing out from everything on the market at the time and bizarre storyline didn't hurt its success either, though
