I do wish we could bring back the days of honoring individuals for creative and interesting map designs, but those are long past.

Honestly though I'm questioning what Half-Life 2 Episode 3 would have been anyway. It's been in development for how long? It better be a full length title by this point.
Hmm, well Return to Na Pali was just like "more levels" to me, but yeah comparison wise it wasn't as good (and like 1/5th as long as the main game). Fighting those humans on top of that one ship almost made me quit though, that was a pain.

I know what you mean about the map designers and such. Unreal levels are like the best thing Cliffy B's done in my book, haha. Let's just get it out there that beyond Unreal and UT I'm not a big Epic fan. I will have to give Unreal 2 a shot sometime though.

Episode 2 came out in 2007. I think the only way I'd be pleased at this point is if:
- It just becomes straight up HL3. Episode 1 was like 2-4 hours max, 2 was a bit longer. Whatever comes next definitely better be a lot longer than these. Just funny to go back in time when they were talking about this approach to the series, how they'd be able to quickly get out episodes of new stuff and fast forward to now, all we got was two parts in nearly five years (Episode One came out in 2006).
- Maybe they're working on a new engine. Valve can continue tweaking Source all they want, but it's getting pretty old. It certainly brought Havoc's physics engine into the masses and was way better optimized than stuff like Doom 3 or something at the time, but it's starting to show its age and I'd like to see Valve try and step it up again in bringing out another new engine that other companies will strive to beat. If this is what's taking so long, it'll be a worthy excuse to me.

Have they ever actually given a solid reason as to why episode 3 is taking so long?

Its not something I follow, but its easy to see people being driven crazy everytime Valve feels like announcing something, and its never Half life.

Not really, nothing at all. "When it's done" is all they ever really say.

Yeah there was a nice outburst when they announced Left 4 Dead 2, just a year after the first one came out.

You know, that's really irritating. I'm not even a fan of the franchise, but it seems kinda crappy that Valve acts this way about it.

I remember the left 4 dead 2 thing though. I'm pretty sure most of the country heard the fans collectively screaming.

Well they aren't straight up jerks about it or anything, they've just been completely leaving us in the dark about it... so yeah. And I don't know if you've finished HL2 EP2 or anything, but it certainly leaves off on a HUGE cliffhanger, so that doesn't help the situation at all either for us fans.

My friends and I can't help but joke now that we wouldn't be shocked to hear about Left 4 Dead 3 or now maybe even Portal 3, more TF2 and CS updates and whatnot before Half-Life anything thesedays.

It was just funny a few weeks ago I was digging through my magazines and found an old PC Gamer covering Episode One, reading it and how they were talking about their episodic business model approach was pretty humorous looking at how things really turned out in the end. lol

If Valve actually decides to call it quits with singleplayer stuff, then this is the worst videogame news I've heard in years.

I honestly don't think Valve cares about Half Life anymore

Though given how vastly the shooter genre has developed since Half Life 2, maybe they just don't think they can compete

Sort of how ID doesn't give a rip about Commander Keen anymore. :( I still want episode 7!

Well, luckily the hints and stuff we've heard about Doom 4 make it sound like id will be taking it more "back to the roots"... I hope, haha. Rage is looking pretty cool too I hope. Honestly id kind of came to mind when this thread popped up for a developer that still seems to put most of their effort into single player campaigns, usually.

Valve is one of the most popular PC developers in the world. Perhaps second only to Blizzard. And yet at the same time they manage to make their fans rage more than most.

Half-Life 2 Episode 3 taking forever to come out.
Left 4 Dead 2 being released only a year after the first game.
Portal 2 being a 5 hour long experience for $60.
And now this.

I think it's pretty funny.
Sorta like a tragic comedy. :/
