Those awkward, early 3D years were basically the precursor to all the great games you see & play now. So I suggest you show some respect.

It's so weird how opposite I am to the rest of you - I couldn't stand the bad camera/3D gameplay in Super Mario 64 when it first came out. Then I got into other 3D games and decided to go back years later and play through Mario 64 and I loved it. Graphics aren't the best, gameplay definitely revealed that they were still working out the kinks (the difference between the camera function in M64 and Ocarina of Time showed that they were continuously making steps or trying new things to see what worked best).

I still like going back and playing Rogue Squadron on the N64 and I am sure there are plenty of people who think the graphics are so bad that you can't tell the X-Wing from the cliffs in the background. Okay, you can't, but for people who played these games when they first came out I am sure it was pretty amazing. Maybe if your first console was a PS2 or XBox it is hard to appreciate these things because there hasn't been, in my opinion, the major jump in technology between modern gen consoles that there was between the SNES and the N64. Now a days, the graphics get a little tweak and the gameplay is a bit more user friendly, but there is not much of a difference in my opinion from one gen to the next. I know it's been argued before and I agree that consoles are being released to quickly. Perhaps we should only be on PS2 now instead of PS3. The change would have been more dramatic and would have been appreciated more.

I'm not sure what this means at all. Is a retro gamer someone who likes everything because it's old?

Go back to the Gamespot forums!

Whoa, whoa, let's not say things we can't take back.

I usually play games because they are fun and interesting. I don't often play games because I want to respect them.

Like what? Dude asked if there is any reason to play PS1 games and based on the ones I've played, there really isn't. I'd like to hear the compelling reason why you're just not a complete person until you've made it through Nightmare Creatures. Unless you really want to play old, un-enjoyable games so that you can sit there and contemplate that moment in the history of the medium. I'd rather just pay Bonk.

EDIT: And I'm reading this on a retro forum no less. The irony

The irony being that you think I'm not "retro" enough for you because I'd rather play games that are good and beautiful on the SNES or GameCube than ones that are bad and ugly on the PS1 or Saturn?

Yes I can and I still don't like the generation that transitioned to 3D. I like the games before the transition and after.

Wait, what? That's a shitty challenge.

For me, a good game is a good game. I still love a lot of great games I've played on the Playstation. I don't care about the graphics. They don't make a game. And even though we've made strides when it comes to gameplay and controls, every game I enjoyed on the Playstation is just as playable now as it was then. I don't care if the original Resident Evil games were sluggish. They were SUPPOSSED to be, and the games were designed around that.

Tomb Raider may look and feel dated, but its classic puzzles are every bit as good now as they were then and I actually LIKED the original Tomb Raider's platform gameplay. It required precision, people who complained about missing all those jumps simply didn't have the skills to pull them off. You can't blame the gameplay, that's just the player having no skills. I find it funny when people bash older games for being unplayable and try to make the game's so-called outdated controls the scapegoat for their lack of skill.

I just can't relate to people who are so spoiled by modern games they can't enjoy any of the older classics. It's their loss. IMO a REAL gamer can enjoy any great game no matter what era it is from

Some reasons why I still love the Playstation:

Wild 9
MediEval
Strider 2
Bust a Groove
Megaman X4 and 5
MDK(not as good as the PC original, but still fun and unique)
Tenchu Stealth Assasins and Tenchu 2(still my favorite of the series)
Einhander
PaRappa the Rapper
Unjammer Lammy
Xenogears(better in some ways than the Xenosaga games)
Dino Crisis
Dino Crisis 2(both of these better than what came after)
Grandia(better than the sequel)
Fear Effect
Crash Bandicoot series(which I'll take over the Jak and Daxter series any day)
Resident Evil 2
Kagero Deception II
Klonoa
Jumping Flash series
Deception 3:Dark Delusion
Oddworld series
Spyro the Dragon
Valkyria Profile

and then there's the shitload of awesome rpgs and god knows how many other awesome games I'm overlooking

I like this analogy, but I see it going three ways:

Some people look back and remember their teen years as the best years of their lives and will constantly try to relive the past. They'll go and play these games and never really get beyond them into the later generations.

Some people look back and only remember the acne, the getting beat up in gym class, and the awkward attempts at social interaction. They'll likely not want to revisit what is to them an ugly era.

And some people will look at it simply as a part of their life as a whole and will be ok going back to this or other generations, while also going ahead.

I don't feel any of these opinions are wrong (and if my language has somehow implied it, I don't mean for it to). Some folks will prefer certain generations over others. That said, there are quite a few games from that generation I like and have or want to go back to, so please don't trash them too much.

Nicely put, I think I fall into the third category

It wasn't meant to be taken seriously. I was implying that he was one of those dudes who cheats his way through the game just to say that he beat it, rather than actually relish the challenge and enjoy the full game

Wait, what? The Warp Zones aren't cheating.

Yes it is. The game was originally designed to be played in its entirety. So skipping levels is considered cheating.

It would be like someone bragging that they beat Battletoads when they used the warps. Doesn't count
