Playing Halo combat evolved for the first time.
Re: Playing Halo combat evolved for the first time.
As far as I'm concerned, console FPS's and PC FPS's should be compared on a game-by-game basis. In addition to this, Halo is a boring console FPS and there's plenty other FPS's on both consoles and on the PC that are far far better.

Having played Bad Company 2 extensively on 360 and since trying BC2 at a friends house on PC. I have to say that I prefer the 360 version. I don't know why but it just seems a more seamless experience. You don't have to worry about switching control schemes or picking up a joystick if you want to jump in a helicopter or tank. You have analogue control over movement which means I can sneak undetected pretty well on the 360 version where as on the PC you have full speed walk or run. Nothing in between.
I tend to prefer my FPS on PC as I much prefer a mouse for aiming over an analogue stick but there are quite a few exceptions. Fallout 3 for me, is a much better experience on 360, it's tailored to a control pad and I found the mouse aiming to be a bit iffy on the PC anyway. I ended up constantly resorting to using VATS which doesn't require a mouse at all. I don't have the game for 360, but I played it with a 360 pad and found it much better. I assume the experience will be identical on 360 aside from downgraded graphics.

Now see I find some these posts interesting as a lot of hadcore PC fans always make that blanket statement that ALL shooters are better on PC. It's like how 360 fans like to convince people that all multi-platform titles are better on 360 than on the PS3, while conveniently failing to mention games like Mirror's Edge, Final Fantasy 13 or Batman: Arkhan AsylumNiode wrote:Having played Bad Company 2 extensively on 360 and since trying BC2 at a friends house on PC. That's because it wasn't one-to-one aiming in Fallout 3; it was heavily influened by your stats. At lower skill levels it was like playing Deus Ex with your weapons only at Trained.Niode wrote:I tend to prefer my FPS on PC as I much prefer a mouse for aiming over an analogue stick but there are quite a few exceptions. If VATS hit 9/10 regardless of skill level then pray tell, what the fuck was the point in adding a real time shooting mechanic to the game?MrPopo wrote:That's because it wasn't one-to-one aiming in Fallout 3; it was heavily influened by your stats. On Deus Ex, there is no automated aiming system so you just make do, however I never found it an issue on Deus Ex, I compensated for the inaccuracy. I still found weapons to be inaccurate on Fallout 3 even if I had a specialisation in them. VATS just works so well it's hardly worth bothering with any weapon specialisation and just focus on other traits.

Pretty sure it was to avoid the twitch people from whining that they had to use this "stupid pause system".Niode wrote:If VATS hit 9/10 regardless of skill level then pray tell, what the fuck was the point in adding a real time shooting mechanic to the game?MrPopo wrote:That's because it wasn't one-to-one aiming in Fallout 3; it was heavily influened by your stats. There is a big difference between DX and F3. With DX you CAN compensate for the inaccuracy; wait before shooting for your accuracy to go up, also crouching increases it. There isn't really a way of doing so in F3. Plus, as far as I could tell DX's system was that accuracy = cone of fire. With F3 it seems to be more of a Morrowind-style "roll for hit" system. On Deus Ex, there is no automated aiming system so you just make do, however I never found it an issue on Deus Ex, I compensated for the inaccuracy. Re: Playing Halo combat evolved for the first time.
I think the only answer to this debate is this....the games are best on whatever platform you prefer to play them on. Nobody will ever convince you otherwise no matter how well thought out and articulate their arguments are. I've basically been a console gamer my whole life, hated FPS's for a long time, got in to them around the Halo 2 days and have played quite a few since then. Since I learned to play them on a console, I prefer to play them on a console. Not that it's a better/worse setup, it's simply the fact that that's what my reflexes are trained for. I've recently gotten in to PC gaming and have tried to play some FPS games on PC and have found that I just can't do the keyboard/mouse control scheme with any level of proficiency. Which sucks because I like the mods available for many FPS's on PC's. But it's like having a life time of kick boxing training and getting thrown in to a wrestling circle with a gold medal wrestler using Olympic wrestling rules - I just get destroyed. Same goal - beat your opponent, but I don't have the tools, skills or reflexes to do it.Gamerforlife wrote: Now see I find some these posts interesting as a lot of hadcore PC fans always make that blanket statement that ALL shooters are better on PC. As far as the original Halo goes, I enjoyed it. The series as a whole has its flaws, but what game really doesn't. I for one enjoy the float jumping because I play my games to escape reality, not to replicate it. I like being able to do a beserker rush toward a group opponents only to jump over his head and shoot while turning 180 degrees in midair to finish him off. I'll still plug this game in once in a while and give it a run. I don't think it's a bad thing that it was something that a lot of people played. As long as I enjoy a game I couldn't give two craps about how many people play it.

Re: Playing Halo combat evolved for the first time.
Halo 1 was a fun little game. I do believe it got alot more press than it should have, or if it was released as a PC only game. But irregardless it is a fun time - 16 player is still awesome. And I will admit, I like it alot more than its sequels. Granted I mostly play them to get ontop of buildings and escape off of the map...
It is true that it did not bring anything new to the FPS genre, but it did redefine what was already there and sell it to the masses in a tight package. And that is a pretty admirable achievement.
I still like Goldeneye more.

OMG the infamous Flood.
I felt like I was in hell when I got to the Library level. Other than that, it was a great game to me. I played it on the XBox. I have Halo 2 as well, but haven't got around to playing it yet.
