You have a couple theme worlds(ice stage, forest stage, etc.) with your standard issue jump here, jump there, jump on enemy to kill them platforming. You have a few speedy set pieces where Sonic goes through some loop de loops and flies through the air. You have some spots where the path branches and player can explore for power ups or gold rings that lead to bonus stages for chaos emeralds. You have your red check points with maybe more bonus stages. Put some scary looking robots everywhere and a big huge robot at the end of each stage for your boss fight. A really awesome, epic bonus stage for the real gamers who actually got all the chaos emeralds and there you have it.
Sheesh, if they screw this up they deserve to be hanged. Most of us on this forum could design this game. We have 2-d Sonic gameplay pretty much programmed into us and there are tons of 2-d Sonics for the designers to study for reference
I'd say that the balance between speed and difficulty is a hard one to achieve, either you go to slow or you run headlong into badniks. Not even the original sonic games did it quite right all the time, with zones like Oil Ocean, Sandopolis, Any bloody zone involving water and Marble zone having stupid things that slow you down too much, and some zones (like aquatic ruin) having annoying enemies that are hard to dodge should you go to fast.
