Nice! That is my favorite horror anthology, and I am glad that you enjoyed it. I will concede that it is more than a bit uneven, and I simply do not like the "cup of tea" story at all. The other three are just so beautiful, however, and the opening credits are simply the best.

I was lucky enought to obtain a beautiful first printing of the book that served as the film's basis a few years ago, and I really do need to read through it at some point.
Lucky!

In a Cup of Tea is probably the weakest of the four stories, hence why I consider it a cooldown for Hoichi the Earless, but I blame its weird, unfinished status. It strikes me as the most Lovecraftian of the bunch, as the character in the story within a story succumbs to madness during his unfinished duel with the three...whatever they are. And its ending is more bizarre than horrific. Its different from the other stories, but both it and The Black Hair are apparently not from the Kwaidan book.

Halloween

A classic that deserves its place, Halloween is beautifully shot, builds with a steadily growing tension, and ends in a climactic showdown that leaves the film open for future series entries. Both Donald Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis do such a great job, and John Carpenter's direction and use of sound is all top notch. Also, Dean Cundey's cinematography is awesome, and I love the heavy use of first person, the emphasis on Myer's body without showing his mask up close until it is too late, the way they frame him looking through windows and doors.

Damn good movie.

^Excellent. This is a required movie for October. I will watch it at least twice. I have watched it on Halloween proper for the past I don't know how many years, and I'll likely see it again some other time this month.

That entire sequence and everything leading up to it is terrific.

I haven't been keeping up with my list, but one thing I can say is that I watch each horror movie a bit differently every year. See, I want to be scared. I want to wake up in the middle of the night after hearing a sound and wondering "What was that?". Most horror movies just don't achieve that.

But that's fine. I Can still enjoy them for their goofy humor and attempts at being scary. And if you can't enjoy Crispin getting funky, have mercy on your humorless soul.

The hell was I thinking? I own every episode (yes, every) of MST3K and haven't touched 'em in years.

To get to it!
