I will concede that it is more than a bit uneven, and I simply do not like the "cup of tea" story at all. The other three are just so beautiful, however, and the opening credits are simply the best.Ack wrote:Kwaidan
I was lucky enought to obtain a beautiful first printing of the book that served as the film's basis a few years ago, and I really do need to read through it at some point.
In a Cup of Tea is probably the weakest of the four stories, hence why I consider it a cooldown for Hoichi the Earless, but I blame its weird, unfinished status. It strikes me as the most Lovecraftian of the bunch, as the character in the story within a story succumbs to madness during his unfinished duel with the three...whatever they are. And its ending is more bizarre than horrific. Its different from the other stories, but both it and The Black Hair are apparently not from the Kwaidan book.
