I beat 3Mix around this time last year and have just started playing it again to aim for completion as I'm hoovering up the remaining hidden coins.

The game is, simply put, a staggering triumph of game design and one of the greatest Mario games ever made. As you say, it goes way beyond a simple mod or hack and more a fluent and brilliantly programmed use of the original engine.

Bookmarked 3Mix. Looks and sounds amazing. I keep craving a new Mario experience but have most of them covered, so I'll consider checking this out sometime.

It is an astonishing achievement. I saw one major website refer to it as "a triumph of the human spirit!" which may sound like hyperbole until you play it and consider that one man was responsible for producing possibly the greatest 8-bit Mario game ever.

The levels are flawlessly designed with none of the usual Kaizo garbage that plagues other mods and hacks and the tribute paid to the entire series as the game progresses will leave you as wide eyed as a child.

Anyone have 3rd mix on a cart? I keep beating around the bush about it, and just need to buy a cart of it to beat it.

My NES gaming nowadays is composed of two elements - Retro AVS and the red 150 in 1 cart. While I still enjoy my original carts, the 150 in 1 gives me 90% of the best games on the console, in an easy to transport box. As soon as I get a new garage heater I am wiring up new sticks for my VS cab and slotting in the AVS.

TMNT 2 with the wife is pretty much perfection.

"Triumph of the human spirit"? Oy vey. That is hyperbole, no matter how good it is! I don't even apply that label to my very favorite games of all time.

Just beat astanyax for the first time. Wow what a great ending to a game. Playing it made me feel like they took as much as they can from legendary axe. I believe this was the nes version because some of the enemies and power ups was almost identical

There's a reason for this! Astyanax has one of the same desginers as Legendary Axe, Tokuhiro Takemori. :)

I feel like I'm having retro gaming withdrawal, it's been awhile!

Is Little Samson awesome? The NES Mega Man games are some of my long time favorites and that game has always looked appealing since it looks so similar to Mega Man.

Yes, Little Samson is awesome. It's not $1000+ awesome, but it is awesome.

Krion Quest is more like Mega Man though.

Little Samson has that visual style, but it plays a little different yet can feel similar still. It's a great game, probably an easy Top30 title, definitely fair to say Top50 I think. But it's not worth the rapey price it has had going on 7-8 years now.
