I'd say more like the mecha genre in general. But yeah I know what you mean.
As opposed to the various sci-fi, anime and manga fanbases (not to mention their genre-fanbases in general)?

I cringe when I hear the phrase "... not a fan of..." It's such a passive way of expressing dislike. Don't care for something? Grow a pair and say that you don't like it, or "That shit fucking sucks!" instead of being all PC about it and declaring your being "a fan" of it or not.

There are plenty of things that I'd say that I'm not a fan of. Saying that something sucks expresses your dislike for it but saying you're not a fan just says that you don't care either way.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Right. There are plenty of things that I'm not fond of, but I can see good points of at the same time. I just don't care.

Not one of my Dreamcast games are pirated. I only own like 20. But still, I'm a Dreamcast fan and still buy Dreamcast games.

None of my games are pirated unless I legitimately own them.

...how else am I supposed to express disinterest or mild dislike?

and why should I act like a dick and/or overly polarize my opinions just because people think it's too 'PC' to not do so?

Yeah, I'd say "not a fan of" = apathy. Not extreme enough to be "hate" or anything.

This.

I'm getting a little tired (and, keep in mind, this goes for culture in general, not just among gamers) of all the instant extremism in language nowadays. People need to realize that there are, in fact, many different nuanced layers to communicate with. You don't need to LOVE or HATE everything.

Now, that being said, using the passive voice to say what you are by stating what you're not is ridiculous, too -- it's like saying you're a college student by saying "I'm not exactly in kindergarten, y'know..."
