But Nintendo has a habit of doing their best to make a significant margin on any hardware they sell, so I don't think that bit of speculation is correct.
This is definitely true, but as said before, Nintendo made a very nice profit on the Wii, and therefore can afford to gamble a bit on this generation - especially with Sony and Microsoft in the later-middle stages of their current consoles. This is why I'm guessing they'll try to deviate from previous business strategies.
I can see that, but companies tend to like making money, so I see them continuing to attempt to do whatever they can to earn money, which means they make stick with that old business strategy.
...that said, we've reached a deadlock and will have to wait to see how things go. In the meantime, what are you playing now?

People like you will be paying for my "next gen" gaming. I'll be playing PS3, 360 and Wii for the next few years to come.
Edit: Pikmin 3? Damn it, Nintendo, you got me. I better get ready to buy one of these come 2012. Unless I decide to pick up a PS3... Decisions decisions!
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

That's what I've been thinking. They could have played it safe and made a 'proper' Wii 2. Just a Wii, only with more accurate motion controls/better Wii-motes, A decent Xbox Live and XBLA alternative (AKA Good Online System), better hardware (Sort of..), and an awesome launch line up - which we may still see.

Is there a problem with a company making money? I think Sony and Microsoft's model is more problematic, it's likely the cause of ballooning development costs.
Anyways, there's still a bunch of problems I could see happening with this thing. As long as they can keep developer support it should be fine. But it'll probably get slightly optimized 360/ps3 ports when it's new, and after the new PS/xbox come out get table scraps. Like the Wii it'll only shine with exclusive games, and like the Wii Nintendo's offering will be by far superior to everyone else's. I just hope the developers they had chatting about it were genuine and have publishers behind them or it could wind up being a big disappointment that had huge potential.
I don't think the system will surpass the 360/PS3 by much, if at all, in terms of graphics, processing, etc. Maybe that doesn't matter to most of the Nintendo faithful, but it means that there isn't going to be an abundance of games for the WiiU that I can't play on one of those other systems (except Nintendo titles, of course). It also means that when the new MS or Sony console comes out a year or two after the WiiU, the WiiU will be obsolete from a hardware perspective. If Nintendo is trying to reach the MS/Sony audience, I don't think they will do so.
I only need to look at my rarely-played Wii to suspect that the same thing will happen with the WiiU...
Niode wrote:I can't see the controller costing that much. As has already been established on this board, it is a thin client therefore there is just a video driver and that's it. No GPU, no CPU, no logic whatsoever. Therefore the bigger cost is the screen and the digitizer, the other components are negligible (CMOS sensors, speakers, gyros and bog standard pots/switches) considering you can get Android tablets with 7inch screens for about £60 and that has to run a self contained operating system. These are going to cost about £50. I don't mind that since 360 controllers are about £30 on their own (£45 if you count the new one) and PS3 controllers are £40. It's not like they're going to price themselves out of the market?
My prediction is £250 for the console and £50 for additional controllers. If they hit that price point it's game over for Sony and Microsoft. Especially if they say their current road maps mean there won't be another system from them for another 3-5 years.
Nintendo have once again, made the entire industry look like utter morons. They will leave everybody else in their dust.
I think you underestimate Nintendo's love of your money, but at the same time, I can see it being cheaper than some people are expecting. Maybe £65ish?
I don't see the controller as something very expensive. It's pretty much in Nintendo's way of thinking when making new hardware. Now touch screens are pretty cheap thanks to tablets, smarth phones and other similar tech so having one won't raise the price too highly.

It's still next gen as far as I'm concerned, just like the wii was as far as I'm concerned. Next gen doesn't have anything to do with power to me, it just means it's part of the next set of consoles. Which it is.
Well I can say one thing for certain, I'm not going to get one at launch. And I'm not going to decide on a console until a PS4 and Xbox 720 have been show cased as well. Wii U most likely will be something I buy at the end of its life this upcoming generation.
I think I'll be better off buying an awesome PC and gaming on that this time around. After all, Wii can be emulated really well at this point using Dolphin - which supports Wii games in 1080p and 3D. Emulation + PC gaming will get me through the next 5 years no problem.
Who knows, maybe Wii U will be emulated during its life span just as the Wii was.
