Avoid the Famicom Ys at all costs.
It joins Phantasy Star in the 'SMS RPGs that leave a bad first impression due to grinding' list.

Both games barely need any grinding once you pass that initial hurdle, but require hours of tedious grinding to actually get properly started.

Ys was worse for it though, because killing Sworms and Owlbears in Phantasy Star levelled you up fairly quickly, killing those fucking bandits outside the first tower in Ys was ridiculous. I seem to remember it requiring something ludicrous like 6000 exp obtained 4 at a time from bandits who you have to move offscreen some way to respawn. After you hit level 5 and could actually hurt the boss in the tower, you basically never needed to grind again.

Okay, so grinding is out of the way on Ys. Did a good portion of level building in the cave, where I ambushed a few bubbly monsters and saved right after each time (200 exp for each); then got lost for a while, which really upped my exp.
The original soldier grind wasn't too bad, as I think level 5 was 1600 exp, not the 6000 that alien mentioned.
I'm maxed out at level 10, but need to track down the Silver Sword (stupid bat demon guy :x ). Had to peek at a walkthrough for that (noise linked a nice guide in "together retro") for Ys).
Haven't needed any maps yet though, and now that I have the Healing Ring, dungeons are no longer a major risk.
Save battery (I believe original) is still going strong at 26+ years from release date  )
(Liking the self-healing, someone should do a rom hack starring Wolverine)

Currently playing on a Original Genesis with Power Base converter, hooked up to a 19" CRT via A/V cables through an RF modulator/converter (low quality yes, but no interference that usually comes with RF; I think it's beautiful for 8-bit gaming).

That Pro Wrestling box art is a competitor for strangest pic on a Sega cover. I'm at a loss for a good head joke

Completed my sojourn in the land of Esteria last night (Ys: The vanished Omens).
Had to consult a walkthrough for a few spots (especially the last bit: making me run back and forth in that tower with 8 pillars between each floor is a bit tedious, especially when you are lost), but enjoyed the journey.
I found the boss fights to be particularly clever for an early ARPG.
Not sure when I'll play another in the series, but between this and Ys III, I can count myself a fan.

Also played a bit of Outrun and Astro Warrior just to shake things up (One day I will beat that 3-level shmup; seems like about as far as I get in most games in the genre anyways  .
Think I'm done with the Master System for now... any other gaming for this system in the near future will be on impulse on a GBA emulator.

Pro Wrestling wasn't bad, although pulling off the moves was a mystery to me when I picked it up all these years later.

I think Great Baseball is very, very good to be honest. I played Great Volleyball and it wasn't terrible but was pretty monotonous.

I don't know if this was mentioned, but you can use the Sega Sports pad on Marble Madness for the Genesis/Mega Drive ports.

Heh,
Via emulation on oXbox... possibly.
But I just assume play the remake on PSP at this point
... or on PC as I recently bought the games on one of the GOG sales (partially for semi-convenient soundtrack access).

As far as the TGCD games, I will definitely have to check out the 4th game some day.

Just drop that TurboGraphix CD game directly into your XBONE. Microsoft will download a copy directly to your XBONE and leave a chocolate on your pillow. On the other hand, if you try to play that TurboGraphix CD game on your PS4, Sony will break your disc, kick you in the shins, and make questionable casting choices in your favorite film franchises.
Back on topic, a friend recently gave me the dubious gift of Black Belt for Sega Master System. The box art just looks like a dismembered foot exploding on that beloved graph paper background.

I love the cover for Black Belt. It's definitely one of the all-time worst covers!

I think the game itself is kind of fun, if you're just casually playing for 30 minutes and using cheats. In Japan it was a Fist of the North Star game and I wish we could have gotten THAT version stateside!

I actually beat Black Belt when I was a kid. Loved it but was stuck on Oni for the longest time.
