Avoid the Famicom Ys at all costs.
Both games barely need any grinding once you pass that initial hurdle, but require hours of tedious grinding to actually get properly started.
Ys was worse for it though, because killing Sworms and Owlbears in Phantasy Star levelled you up fairly quickly, killing those fucking bandits outside the first tower in Ys was ridiculous. I seem to remember it requiring something ludicrous like 6000 exp obtained 4 at a time from bandits who you have to move offscreen some way to respawn. After you hit level 5 and could actually hurt the boss in the tower, you basically never needed to grind again.
