It's not what he did, it's how he did it. Going to the infirmary was the right thing to do, and needed to be done, but at the very least he should have told someone what he was doing, or he should have tried to get Glen to go with him (I know Rick told Glen to stay put, but I think the prospect of saving Hershel would have prompted him to move). Instead he left everyone there, with them thinking he was organizing the food.
Sure, he killed two zombies. Good for him. What if there had been more? Gun or no gun he's still only, what, 10? As the shows proven, all it takes in one strong or sneaky zombie and even the most favorite of characters can go down. And to top it off, no one would have known about it, because they were to focused on Hershel.
He may have done the right thing, but he did it the wrong way.
Also, his little attitude doesn't win him any points for me either. And why is it that the only one to put him in his place is the young girl?

One was all like, "I want to kill myself" last season. Now Maggie is all like, "It's okay dad. Stopping fighting and just give up and die." Jesus. It's a good thing Maggie's cute, as she's a real downer to have in an apocalypse. When she first appeared on the show, she seemed like a strong female riding on her horse and kicking zombie ass. She's the complete opposite now. They need Andrea and Michone in the group quick, because the ladies are all kind of pathetic. Letting the men do all the ass kicking while they whine and cry
I think you're confusing emotionally weak with touching moment.
You think Maggie wanted Hershel to die? Of course not. She was thinking practically. Most everyone around her that she knew has died or she watched die and come back from the dead, including a lot of her friends and family. That's got to be hard.
Hershel's essentially on his death bed and it doesn't look good for him. That whole scene you mentioned was about her not wanting him to suffer and trying to let him know that if he was in pain and clinging to life for their sakes, that it was okay to let go because they could take care of themselves. That's not being emotionally weak. That's trying to remain strong in the wake of another potentially deviating loss.
And while Maggie was doing that, her sister
did have hope. You don't start ripping off one pant leg of your fathers slacks and talk about the potential of him tripping over them when you've given up hope and expect to burry him in them. You do that because you expect him to live.
As for the whole "kicking zombie ass" thing, I think you've forgotten the first episode already, where Maggie was the
only female in the group that helped stormed the prison. I think she's doing just fine in that area. So she was crying this episode. So what? She thought her father was going to die, for gods sake. Not everyone can lose their emotional core as quickly as Rick can.
We definitely need more Michone, though. We got jack-squat of her or Andrea this episode. I guess they'll figure more prominently in the next episode.
