He's the only one I've run into like that so I just assume he's insanely picky. Oath formula is also my favorite of the classic era and my fave formula. I live the bump system. Series evolve and change..even Dragon Quest. I do hope the next one is just Adol but as long as it's not Seven, it will be fine.

I am ready for another Ys III. Do you hear me, Falcom? My body is ready!

Well Bone likes what he likes. One thing I've always appreciated about Bone, is he doesn't mince words and is crystal clear on his opinions.

As for me, I enjoy Ys games from all three eras. (I even enjoyed Ys Seven despite its lack of popularity around here.) If I were to rate each Ys game I've personally beaten from most enjoyed to less enjoyed:

Ys Origin (PC)
Ys Seven (PSP)
Ys Ark of Napishtim (PC)
Ys Oath in Felghana (PC)
Ys I Eternal (PC)
Ys III (TGCD)
Ys V (SFC)
Ys IV (SFC)

I got very far in Ys IV for TGCD, but didn't enjoy it and quit. That's one Ys ol' Bone and I just don't agree on.

Parts I through IV on PCE are pure bliss.

As far as recent titles go, Origin is the best with Felghana in second. Felghana had the luxury of great source material to work with. Ys III is pretty underrated. I think many of those who dislike it are playing one of the inferior ports.

The "picky" remark made me chuckle a bit because I'm almost universally accepting of most retro console games (I will buy anything I don't own on the 2600, NES, SMS, etc.) and when it comes to realm of RPGs I've always been a staunch defender of "bad" ones like Final Fantasy II, Mystic Quest, Lagoon, Hydlide, and so on. I'm generally more critical of modern games, as they seem to lack an inherent "charm" and thus require more fine-tuned mechanics to qualify as "good."

You do have very specific tastes, Bone. You'll play older stuff that I'd skip right over, honestly.

However, I'm waiting for Ys VIII to pick up as well. I'm not overly impressed with what I've played to this point. It feels like we're going even further down the Celceta route, and the game, at least to this point, is suffering for it. And I don't think the localization has quite the charm of XSEED's best to pull off the exposition. I actually enjoyed the downtime in Ys Seven, and thought it did a great job of bringing in a few modern elements while keeping the core intact.

I'm not giving up yet, but... I dunno, man. Seems like Ys' best days may be behind it. :(

The PC Engine version of this is the only Ys game I've really liked so far. The soundtrack is extra dope.

Ys 1 will always be my favorite in the series. Esp TG16 & PSP versions. III is fantastic and yeah the TG version best ost of any version. SNES my least fave and Genesis my second fave. I feel Oath is the better of the formula Origin and VI use. Mainly because I can go back to the town. Origin can drag at times from not having much of a break plus you technically need to play it 3 times, making it the longest of that formula so it's not as fast as one thinks. Tho in a single playthrough they are the same. I beat both in 12 hours.

That's what I liked about Origin, the opposite. You are constantly going through a dungeon. No towns to slow things down.

Or just watch the endings on Youtube.

According to my HLTB, I finished my first run though Ys Origin in 8 hours 41 minutes. And I'm not even good at video games.

I generally take longer than most people because I like to explore a lot. So I found some hidden stuff.
