I hated Eva for like 8 years because of the dub, finally rewatched it last year in Japanese and it was actually tolerable. Still not the END AND BEGINNING OF ANIME to me or anything, but yeah. It was watchable.
That particular era of anime dubbing saw a bizarre trend of whiny super-nasal voices, and ADV was one of the worst offenders. It wasn't just them though. The dub of Tenchi Muyo was like nails on a chalkboard to me for the very same reason.
IT HURTS! Another great example, haha. I rewatched all of Tenchi as well earlier this year in Japanese, I flipped over to the dub sometimes and I remember Ryoko sounding old like she did, but I forgot how much worse Ayeka's dub voice was. Seriously, it was freaking terrible.

Anyone need proof!? Right here! Brace for it...

Holy shit.

I've just never understood the logic of people saying all dubs suck because their not the original language, as if all japanese voice actors are transcendent bards who never mess up, turn in a bad performance, or take a job for a paycheck.

An actor is an actor.

Also the dub actor is in a much more difficult position time and money wise. If they turn in a great performance, it takes a lot of ability and effort. Its not an excuse when they don't but it does play into it.

Also, i find it out that so many non native speakers are judges of accuracy and validity of dub scripts and performances.

Its all moot anyway, as its not the bad old days. You don't have to choose anymore, and in some cases you only get a sub such as my beloved Tekkaman Blade set.

I didn't mean to invoke two pages of responses, but over the years i have grown very tired of these kinds of blanket statements.

Just a little jest, not to be taken too seriously. :)

Looking forward to your thoughts on that one. I've been curious about it myself.
I just watched the first episode. I watched it dubbed as Jared Padalecki actually voiced his own character, which is Sam. Going by this episode it seems like they are basically remixing some season 1 episodes. I think they nailed everything that a fan might expect. If definitely feels like a Supernatural episode. The only thing missing is the classic rock music, although they do play Carry on My Wayward Son by Kansas at the end so that was cool. That song is definitely one that you associate with the original tv show as a fan. The anime's music works, but it sounds like anime music rather than Supernatural music. That along with Jenson Ackles not voicing Dean are the only things missing from Supernatural's formula. The guy they got definitely nails Dean's character though

So basically, I liked it. However, it appeals to me as a Supernatural fan. A hardcore anime fan might not be as impressed by it as there are plenty of anime series based around demons. Supernatural is kind of unique as a live action tv show, but it doesn't really stand out as an anime where the kinds of things the show does are pretty normal by anime standards.

Im looking forward to that as well since im still waiting to see season six on dvd.

I started watching the live action show earlier this year and it took a while to catch up via netflix dvds and reruns on tv.

Its a shame Jensen Ackles isnt in the show until the last two eps i think. Is his replacement a name voice actor?

I think you are confusing two different mindsets. Folks who generalize dubs as mostly bad will usually cite technical issues with the dubbing process that impair good voice acting, issues that often damage accurate translation, and generally low (but improving!) standards in the industry--all of which are fairly valid points, I think. Some in this group may over-generalize, but you have to understand that when you've seen SO MANY really bad dubs from not all that long ago, you develop an aversion to watching new dubs. These folks quit watching dubs ages ago, because they were almost always terrible, so how would they know that it's getting better? Anyhow, it's not about Japanese actors necessarily being better, it's about the dubbing process being awful in and of itself.

People who simply prefer to watch everything in its original language (e.g. "I want to watch it in Japanese because it was originally in Japanese") don't necessarily care whether the dub is good or bad when choosing to watch with subtitles. Rather, they just want to watch the show or film as close to how the director intended it as possible, and as close to the original experience as possible, without it being reinterpreted by a whole new staff. I think this is perfectly reasonable too.

You know, unless (God forbid!) you happen to be a sub fan that would like to watch anime on TV. Heaven help you in that case. :P

Well with the paltry amount of anime on cable tv, not on demand mind you, I doubt thats much of a problem.

any dub that sounds like the DiC Sailor Moon or the first season of Digimon fills me with a nostalgia rush strong enough to overcome any and all quality issues

There are plenty of people who would like to watch Naruto or Bleach with subs, and without having to either rely on pirated fansubs or wait months for the DVDs of the latest episodes to come out. Same goes for when Inu Yasha, Trinity Blood, or Eureka Seven (oh man that one was a bad dub!) were on U.S. television, etc. There may not be a lot of anime on TV over here, but a lot of the anime that is on tends to be significant.

Thank you, it's not really a "quality control" issue or anything for me, it's just simply a preference and really, that's that for me. Ever since I got back into anime around 2006-2007 I've been watching 110% nothing but subs, so it's just simply my main preference and here to stay.

I've got a handful of friends that still prefer dubs, or might have some friends that have a dubbed anime in the background when we're hanging out. Am I going to walk out or give them crap about it? Not at all, it's no big deal to us and we just kind of joke about it. I wish more people (on both sides) could just be calm and professional about it.

Interestingly enough Hulu+ has been getting a lot of subbed only anime for streaming, even like the newest episodes of One Piece, and things like that. My friend was showing me a bunch of stuff they had last week. Of course it's typically mostly modern anime getting streamed and such, but that's still pretty cool for the sub fans that want to watch new stuff over their TV or whatnot. I think my friend said Naruto was dubbed though.

I'm aware of it, and I think it's great--for people who have a media center PC in their living room, anyway.
