I've had sleep paralysis twice before. That stuff's not a joke. The first time I woke up but couldn't move anything but my eyes for 20 minutes.
The second time I woke up and was rocking back and forth on my side uncontrollably in bed. Every time I rocked forward my vision would rush through the bars of my bunk and towards the ground (first person). Then as I rocked back my vision moved up from the ground and back through the bars to my bed. I could see my clock on the dresser and that time it lasted from exactly 3:24 to 4:11. Scary crap. Trust me.

i think the waking up and not moving anything but your eyes is fairly common. I tend to get that about once a week it doesnt scare me anymore just bores me since im so used to it.

Re: sleep paralysis
Everyone get's sleep paralysis (or at least something similar to it). It's what stops you from sleep walking or lashing out in your sleep (and subsequently hurting yourself). Some people have this part of their brain defective and experience sleep walking or sometimes night terrors because of it.
I've had sleep paralysis a few times. I lucid dream quite frequently and sometimes the sleep paralysis follows such a dream. It's mainly caused by the brain not knowing whether it is awake or asleep and causes hallucinations (the dreaming part) and the sleep paralysis is there because the brain still thinks you are asleep.
It's not very nice and it feels like somebody is sitting on me or there is some unseen force in my room holding me down.
The paralysis usually follows a falling episode in my dreams. That's not nice. You keep falling but can't move to jolt yourself out of it. So you keep falling. When I finally wake up I still can't move and then the sleep paralysis occurs.
For you guys who have Sleep Paralysis episodes. Start writing your dreams down when you wake up. I know it sounds lame but it's a good way to begin recognising lucid state and controlling your dreams.
Not eveyone can do it, but I've found people who experience a sleep paralysis episode at least once in their life have been able to do it better than others. Some people don't ever achieve lucid state despite trying for years. Some getting the first few times they try.
Wow I sound like a real new-age hippy or something!

Re: sleep paralysis
I get sleep paralysis, but its different its called laziness. Usually coffee cures it. On a serious note, I never heard of this issue before. Sounds messed up, there must be some kind of treatment to reduce the problem. Maybe a doc that deals with sleep disorders, I'm not sure.
Re: sleep paralysis
I rarely dream, but I've been able to control my dreams 90% of the time since i was a very young kid. So I've never really experienced sleep paralysis. i have been known to have some ridiculous sleep walking adventures.
One time I was in a dream where i was an action hero, jumped out of bed with my pillow in my arms, which i believed was my gun. Made my way out of the house, and our alarm system beeped. I thought i triggered some kind of enemy sentry, and BOLTED down my street. I got about 3 blocks away from my house before my mom caught up to me, and had to convince me that the hostages had already been saved, and i needed to go back to HQ.

Re: sleep paralysis
Yea, i have sleep paralysis frequently. I also trained myself to have lucid dreams only when I'm having a bad nightmare. When i was little I had night terrors and sometimes I do random things in my sleep, most commonly I laugh. Anyway, I really didn't think this was common at all, most people I talk to have never experienced something like that outside of drug use. I can see the room I'm in very clearly as though I'm awake, but then I can't move. When i'm not alone I start breathing in a certain pattern and my SO wakes me up, so due to recent years I haven't had to work too hard to force myself awake. Never had a black figure or anything else out of place, though. I think this is where the Incubus/Sucubus myth originated.
Also, I used to have blackouts and cataplexy. All these symptoms are signs of narcolepsy or just really bad stress. I guess poor blood circulation has a lot to do with it, too. Either way, thank goodness for science to keep me from thinking the Devil is after me! How else would a superstitious society explain it?

It's horrible isn't it? I get jolted awake and grab onto the bed, but every once in a while it doesn't work and you feel like you are falling. I'm also scared of heights. So it really sucks. My fiancée is used to it now though and she just nudges me and it's ok.

Re: sleep paralysis
Also i hope i am not the only one that sometimes has a dream 'world' in sleep paralysis. You know, looks kinda the same, some things are bent and missing, sky is red, world is abandoned, tends to go w/ my sleepwalking. Anyway thats one thing ive gotten used to the point its just more time awake for me, no friends or electricity but I can wander around the house etc. Its kinda cool. Other than the fact more than 1 time ive woken up 3 blocks away...
