Metal Gear Solid games always frustrate me, but I usually come away from them with something that makes me not regret playing them. I hated MGS 3 for a couple of hours into it, then I reached a certain point in the game where my interest picked up and the final act of the game completely floored me it was so damn good. Though it took me a video walkthrough to even have the patience to get that far as the overhead camera and lack of radar made it so hard to spot enemies and that was pissing me off.
I hated the fact that the camera was stationary in MGS3. It's the only game i've had to play on easy mode. Just so I could complete it. Lack of 3D camera makes the game unplayable. Fuck getting spotted all the time and then having fuck all places to hide. I was skeptical that the 3D camera system would be any good until I played MGS4. The camera system is absolutely flawless and I just didn't even need the Soliton Radar to get anywhere. I could see my enemies and adapt my tactics accordingly. I tried playing MGS2 on Eureopean Extreme mode and just couldn't get anywhere, not because of the difficulty, but because the static camera system is terrible and accidentally stumbling across a guard because there was absolutely no way of seeing them is a game breaker. I would have the same difficulty playing it on normal without the radar.
If you want to give MGS 3 another shot I would get subsistance, due to it having the 3D camera system included. I bought the other day because it's crashed in value recently. I managed to get it for £20. The lowest i've seen it for ages up until the release of MGS4. I've seen it go for over £60 at one point on ebay.

I've thought about trying Subsistance, seems to be the game Hideo should have made in the first place. I might pick it up at some point if the price really has gone down. I bet the demand has gone done with MGS 4 being out and the industry moving on into next gen.
Yep, the price has bombed. I guess people wanted to play through it before MGS4 came out. Now that it's out the demand for the previous title has dropped. It happens all the time.
It would have been nice to have got the 'definitive' version the first time round but lets face it, it's not the first time Kojima-san has done this to us…
No doubt we'll see a Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Sustenence Edition.
