And the GTA games? Yeah, maybe if he's into just blowing stuff up for 10 minutes before becoming bored.
Honestly, if you liked Dark Alliance at all, check out the sequel and maybe the Champions of Norrath titles. These games are fun if you have someone else to play them with, but by yourself they may not be nearly as fun. However, if you like customizing characters and just hacking your way through hordes of enemies--they're great.
Also consider:
Metal Gear Solid 3
Suikoden 5 (much better than 3)
Silent Hill 3
Resident Evil 4
What's so bad about Rogue Galaxy? It looks great, cool universe, good battle system, no load times when exploring, interesting weapons system, plenty of side quests...ok the plot is so-so in parts. I'd give it an 8 out of 10. Not perfect but a pretty solid game. I recomended it because he has Dragon Quest VIII, which was also made by Level 9.
I do agree with you about GTA. Not really worth your time unless you have homicidal tendancies and need a way to work them out so you don't shoot up your college French class.

Funny joke, but sick nonetheless. Of course, I am for one not the sensitive type. A funny joke is funny only if you understand it. I understand it completely. Kill in game, reset. Kill in life, go straight to hell (or heaven if you believe in that). AH AHAH

I meant so that they WOULDN'T kill anyone in real life, instead just virtualy in the game. It's still a bit sick.

You know, when it comes to GTA, I didn't bother with the guns at first. The storyline is a nice, satiric look at a section of American life (and I'm quickly discovering a well-excepted stereotype of America in foreign nations). The combat has been 'meh' since GTA III. Some of the little ways to power up a character are nifty, I suppose. But GTA: San Andreas had a few things going for it that I really liked. A huge sandbox was nice, really inspired me to go exploring. The radio was entertaining, I spent hours listening to my favorite stations. I had fun flipping cars and taking bikes off cliffs and everything. But San Andreas did one thing that no other game I have ever played has allowed me to do.
They let me steal a riding lawnmower.
In the end, that was really all it took to make me happy.

Why you wanna cut grass in a game when you can do it in real life and get paid for it too? You can cut my lawn to your heart's content any day of the month. I even let you borrow the lawnmower. Just don't jack it like you do in the game. HA HAHA.

They play like an MMO. I've played the first one most of the way through. You have a computer with email and you log into the game and use an avatar and guess what, something goes terribly wrong. Anyway, you have to make virtual friends and team up with others and go on quests....etc. Graphics are ok, character design is a bit flamboyent for my taste. Battle system is ok, kind of predictable, and you have to access menu's alot to use you special moves and items, which slows down the action. I've heard the .hack gu games are a bit better, but I've never played them.

Rogue Galaxy has a slow and uninteresting plot, forgettable characters, bland music and a boring battle system with randomized dungeons. I stopped playing that game for the same reason I stopped playing Dark Cloud 2.
And even though DQVIII was made by Level 5, it's almost nothing like any of their other games. However, Dark Cloud 2 and Rogue Galaxy have a ton of similarities.

It's funny alot of poeple hate DQVIII and like Dark Cloud 2 and Rouge Galaxy, some share your opinion. Which is exactly what it is, your opinion. I personally thought the chararters were allright (their voices were annoying) and I liked the battle system. Also, the dungeons, although similar, were random in Dark Cloud 2 but not Rouge Galaxy. You can also explore anywhere you want in Rouge Galaxy. He's actually already played Rouge Galaxy, so let him make his own opinion.
You don't like Rouge Galaxy I get it!
I personally think Champions of Norrath are horribly bland, allthough he may like them and appreicate the recomendation. Good thing is you can find them for like 8 bucks nearly anywhere. But you might as well play an online MMO then at least you can play with some other people! Thats just my opinion.
Well, that makes sense considering how traditional DQVIII is. That series has never been too popular in the states. Anyway, the Norrath games are, like I said, only fun when played with other people. I believe there is support for up to 4 players, so that is also cool.
