Being an RTS junkie, I'm saying Age of Empires. It was the game that got me hooked on the genre.

Myst sold more than DOOM yes. DOOM was a far, far better game than Myst, at least for hardcore gamers sure. They were both equally influential in their genres.

But you guys are still all wrong because Thief was the best 90's PC game, not DOOM.
PC is usually equated with Windows and DOS while Mac is usually used to refer to all games on Macintosh computers as a separate entity.

I get what you're saying, but Mac is by very definition a personal computer.

And I remember reading the DOS/Windows versions of Myst sold more copies than the Mac version did. Mainly due to the proliferation of DOS/Windows PCs compared to the Mac install base, and also multiple iterations of the Windows version of Myst.

I never liked Myst though, even when I was kid in the 90's. Yes it was PRETTY, but I thought it was boring and badly designed.

Sure, I'm just sticking with what I see to be the common vernacular. Truth be told, I like and own both, but I like them for very different reasons. Frankly, picking a "best" game of any kind is not something I've ever really been able to do. I struggle to name favorites of anything because I know my tastes change, both short term and long term.

Technically, they're both "personal computers," but it's not used that way. Technically, most video games are "role playing games" because you play SOME role in most games, be it silent green-clad elf boy slayin evil, overweight plumber saving a princess, random American soldier killing brown people, random space-American killing demons etc.

It's nit-picky, but the distinction is made for the sake of specificity.

When discussing gaming, "PC" refers to the IBM PC compatibles and the modern platform that evolved from them.

So in an incredibly rhetorically confusing way, Macs are personal computers but they're not PCs.

One is an official ad campaign by the company trying to differentiate itself in the common vernacular, the other is fan made.

Hah that old Apple ad. I had to flip the channel when that came on most the time, it was just douchy, arrogant and entirely wrong. The PC was the nerd box and the Mac was the douche box, which really wasn't the case in either.

This is about the PC game though. I saw that 80s bit, I'd throw it to either Sim City DOS or going back further (and I'm not a fan in the least bit) Infocom Zork as it opened a lot of doors and the development curve off that added pictures, the mouse...Sierra, Lucasarts, point and click. One of the oldest mainstays of computer gaming right there just as SimCity was for simulation development titles as the roots really trace back to that.

Oh and with the RTS, Westwood -- Dune 2, that one was the grandaddy of that format as far as the modern style goes. Crude around the edges (can't even move a group at the same time) which C&C ironed out greatly. And right along side that Blizzard kept pace with Warcraft 1 and the refinement in 2...shame that by the time Starcraft popped up the main game was a cheating hot single minded pathing mess in favor of an online game element. One of the early shifts of a genre away from the person to the group much like the FPS genre has done.
