Which gaming community do you wish still existed?
Re: Which gaming community do you wish still existed?
I kinda wish the old GamesRadar forum still existed. I spent a good few years on there, though I wasn't one of the ones who jumped onto the new forum (GRcade), since then forums have taken a back seat until I found one where I actually feel settled in, plus I did enjoy the podcast from time to time.

I'm glad to hear that Darkstalkers isn't a good example. I'm amazed there are still local, biweekly tournaments of such an old series
I wish I had capital to create a modern "barcade". And I don't mean this in a nostalgic sense, I mean it in a bussiness sense. The amount of money that is being let go is incredible.
Sadly, TF2 isn't the way it used to be, at least for me. It's still hugely popular and the competitive scene is great, but most servers now are...well, jank. It used to be easy to find well-populated servers without crits and a good map rotation but now I only know a couple. And I don't want to brag but...I'm too good for them. I get like 20 kills per life, people don't community and I end up not having as much fun. It's a real shame.
Sadly, Bemanistyle has been moribund for some years now. It tried to be a legal, mainstream site which was unattainable given that most of the games it covered are only available in Japanese arcades. I don't remember it well, but there was a big ruckus about posters not being able to openly discuss piracy and emulation and most of the veterans simply gave up on the site. The rest simply went to Zenius I Vanisher, which keeps tracks of scores and was a somewhat fresher place for discussion.Nemoide wrote:Another place I miss is DDR Freak. It was never the greatest community, a lot of DDR players show too much one-upsmanship. But I liked being able to talk DDR with other people who were serious about the game! I think Bemani Style, a broader music game community still exists, but it's not the same.
Yeah, me too. There's actually a lot of people who want an arcade scene here in Madrid, but all arcade operators are morons who never repair their 10 year old and counting machines so the community has nowhere to form. The Pump it Up guys now go to Tres Cantos which is like an hour away just to play and they paid for the upgrade because the arcade didn't want to do it.On a more localized level, I wish there was an "arcade scene" somewhere near me. I'd love to play 2D fighting games, DDR, or even pinball against someone in person.

You always have the Fortress Forever guys. Also the TFC team is one of the antagonists in the TF2 storyline now so I bet they have fansAck wrote:Team Fortress and TFC, so kids stop thinking TF2 is actually cool.

Of course it is. And the TFC team will win, because the TF2 folks have no way to counter AIDS.Erik_Twice wrote:You always have the Fortress Forever guys. That's the way it goes, unfortunately. Soon enough you'll jump in and then realize you're the only human on the server and everyone else is a bot. TFC has been that way for over a decade now. It's a shame, but the only way I can go back now is when I get a bunch of friends to jump in...and that really just doesn't happen anymore. The days of triple concing 2Fort are over.
As for Fortress Forever...eh, I played it back when it was version 1.0. Nah, I'm good.
Re: Which gaming community do you wish still existed?
Maybe this misses the point?
The only one I miss was the offline or local in area online gaming community. It was a general group of friends or just people in the area who loved nothing more than to talk about games, some traded games, maybe had a club, and others sold them back and forward when they were finished. People would talk about what they found at the store and how cool that game was, money was never brought up ever, because it wasn't a sole person for profit thing, sure there were local stores or chains like Funcoland, but it was always cheap so no one cared.
The main focus was a bit like the Let's Retro here where we'd pick a game and play it, or if it was already played, talk about the memories or things about it, but it was a daily basis or weekly, not monthly. It was just more fun then, personal, it was about the game and not about the dollar is represented. If people wanted to pay $50 or more on a game, they'd go to EB or Sears or whatever and buy it as it was new for their SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, etc. Stuff people now consider worth hundreds were thrown around like water and there wasn't a care in the world for it. I'm basically dating this like late 80s through 2000-01 roughly. Though even then when it went fully online the discussions were the same maybe up until 5 years ago which are now drowned out.
I'm sure some of you had a group of friends or an early BBS or yahoo like chat thing in your county or town and screwed around with stuff for fun like that without a care in the world and as you got older it went online more wide spread. That's what I miss. Even in places you still find it now online, it still comes back to price as it has been beaten to death by a big sack of coins.

Re: Which gaming community do you wish still existed?
Fortress Forever has gotten better, and is now on steam. I still have little desire to play it. I really wish I could have gotten into TF2, but TFC was so ingrained in my playstyle that I had trouble getting into a groove with it.
The only community I wish was still around was LAN parties based on Party games and large scale FPS's. Sure there are still LAN parties, but they are mostly based around DOTAlikes and the last one I went to no one wanted to play anything but SMITE. It was very saddening to me. Dont get me wrong, when I get into a game and am having fun, I dont want to swap, but I hate the single mindedness. It makes me rethink building a LAN party rack.

I miss playing Mario Golf and Mario Kart 7 on 3DS, the only people on there now are friggin wizards
Re: Which gaming community do you wish still existed?
That's got to be disappointing if you can't get teamed/matched up with similar talented people as that's not really fair for the enjoyment value on that part of the game. I only recently reacquired MK7 but golf I won't for many reasons and I guess that would be another which is a shame. At least there aren't people hacking/cheating so badly like with the DS/Wii era stuff as that's even worse.
Re: Which gaming community do you wish still existed?
If we're talking games with online matchmaking communities that don't exist anymore, I really enjoyed MAG, as well as the Jump Stars games on the NDS. Wish those were still around.

Re: Which gaming community do you wish still existed?
It's interesting you say that because they have shown the whole TFC except for the Medic. TF2's medic is in his spot as the "new guy" and I suspect that's going to become very relevant very soon.Ack wrote:Of course it is. And the TFC team will win, because the TF2 folks have no way to counter AIDS.
They also have a very sore spot about being old and "not getting any younger" which gives a cool dimension to the story
The thing is, it's not really that people stop playing, it's just that clan servers are not the focus anymore, specially since those big genertic 24/7 servers are everywhere. Now people who want to compete play privately or hang out on random servers so there's less room for pubstars and the like. That's the way it goes, unfortunately. Still, I have a much better connection now so I should try playing with Americans.
