Games you really wish had better graphics

I remember. I kept hearing, "Oh the graphics are terrible." "Oh this game looks awful." "Oh you need to mod it to make it playable." So I thought I needed it. But you told me to try it without it, and I beat it that way. You don't need mods at all to play it.

Blazing Heroes is a less awesome game but the graphics are just SO UGLY that I've never been able to get into it. This game would have benefited from sticking to 2D graphics. Seriously, I know it's a strategy RPG so graphics SHOULDN'T be the focus but they're so bad they pull me out of it.

That's kind of the thing, isn't it? It doesn't need 3D at all and just looks worse than 2D games of its kind.


The more I think about it, the more I think that 3D graphics were a huge step backwards too many games.

See, I'd argue that the original Star Fox is low poly enough that it's still great looking. It doesn't fit into that middle era where there were enough polygons to know what things they were trying to make models look like but couldn't actually pull off.

Agreed. I love the way StarFox looks, and I think it has held up much better than its N64 sequel.

It's more a sign of the times and I really like the N64 but a lot of those games are painful to look at while playing.

I thought N64 games were ugly then. Come at me, bros.

I never thought Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, or Diddy Kong Racing were ugly. Or Ogre Battle 64. But all "realistic" 3D games from that era looked like shit. Even some DC/PS2/Xbox/GC games looked really bad instead of just mediocre.

Super Mario Kart dear god give obstacles height. Why they decided to just paint some obstacles on the ground is beyond me. Really the ice blocks in Vanilla Lake pissed me off so bad couldn't see them till you were right on top of them and they took multiple hits to break.

Damn man you beat me to it. They upgraded Starfox 64 on 3DS or I'd have gone with that one too in the same post. Starfox holds up so well but the visuals turn people off though I feel it has this style all to its own, same can be said with the finished unreleased Starfox 2 too. With this big push to remake oldies going on in the last decade (like the NES kirby on GBA being an early one) I think it would be a solid cash in choice.

Since that generation got brought up, I think much of the N64 library from Nintendo and its 2nd parties could use the boost since even then it (and the Saturn/PS) looked fairly bad against how colorful and smooth the generation before was. It was like jumping back to the Intellivision or Coleco in a ways how rough the early 3D systems were.
