My understanding is that it isn't a vWii game, it's been slightly modified to run in Wii U mode. It's why games that supported Classic Controller can be played on the Gamepad. Metroid Prime Trilogy was never one of those games, and they didn't add that functionality in. I think that Punch-Out!!, on the other hand, did support the Classic Controller, and will work Gamepad-only.
I don't know, however, if it at least mirrors the display on the 'pad. Does it?

When you start the game you get the option - TV Only or TV & Gamepad.
