Wow, everyone's angsty and for different reasons it seems.
The initial rage I experienced has since subsided. But I still have many questions and considerations.

Don't get me wrong, despite it's recent years SEGA still happens to be one of my favorite companies. I wasn't ever a fan of SEGA because of their legal team. It's their games that won me over ages ago, even if 90% of what they've released in the last 10 years is hogwash to me.

There's no guarantee that this is actually Fujii/SEGA to begin with, although SEGA has been stupid quiet about the situation. They cannot be reached for statement other than one that said (paraphrased) "Although we do not expressly give permission we typically do not pursue cases like these." This, however, being a reply from the @SEGA America/Sega Europe twitter to a person in a similar boat as me. So, it can be understood that SoA&SoE don't know what the hell SoJ is doing. What's new?

A further puzzling matter is why Sega of Japan's legal department would be handling this when Shining Ark isn't even slated for release in the west (at least not yet). By all means our videos should not mess with the SERP of japanese search engines. After all, search engines prioritize local content. This is just how it works. But it is specifically shining series videos being target. Shining Force III and Shining the Holy Ark, without concern of legitimate fair use (which again is bad news bears. Abuse of Copyright strikes is against the law. At least here.)

So again, what is the meaning of all this?

And in Youtube's defense, I understand their system completely. The sheer amount of strikes that must happen on the daily, most of which I gather are legitimate in the eyes of Copyright law. It's better to cover your own behind and file first, ask questions later; at least from a practicality stand point.

And while I do agree that Copyright law is outdated and needs to be modernized, this isn't the issue here. Those of you telling me "muh copyrights. muh freedoms. They can do what they wants hurr" are not adding anything significant here. They are not within rights, at least none on earth in this case. Many videos hit here are within Fair use.
The issue in question isn't copyright law, but the fraudulent abuse of copyright Law by a man we know as Fujii Mutsuhiro.

I'd love it if you could point me to a source for the speculation. It would turn me on.

as soon as I find it I'll link. I've just heard it on various message boards, no websites or anything.

He doesn't represent the company and acting on Sega's behalf for this for what I hear is butt hurt over those paticular shining games in question (he feels they're better than his and thus wants to erase all record of them) so I'm sure something is brewing.

It was being discussed on the HG101 forums shortly before they kicked me out.

This is beginning to sound like the plot of one of those Japanese horror films about the lowly business man that goes on a rampage after being fired or whatever, haha.

A competent racer passes for great now? At least for sonic, since that franchise has been able to put out what 4 decent games since 1999 (2001 if you think sonic adventure 2 is good).

Eh I'd say Colors and Generations are both better than Adventure 1.

What are the "4 decent games" anyway? Colors, Generations, and uh... the kart racers?

Well, if we're going to discuss sonic games of this decade:
Generations:
I enjoyed generations quite a bit, minus some of the 3D segments and the level from Sonic 06 they felt obligated to include.
Sonic 4 EP 1 & 2:
I enjoyed them to a degree although some of the level design and gimmick choices were horrendous if not nearing game breaking status. Still, I feel like they're pandering with these games, and sonic generations managed to do 2D way better.

The idea of sanik cart racers scares the bejeezus out of me. Riders was hilarious.
I loved Sonic Heroes.

-shrug-
They weren't all bad, I suppose. Not great, but not bad. I still haven't played many of them, specifically the wii iterations. I've been kind of avoiding the franchise ever since sonic 06. And I refuse to touch that were-hog unleashing bologna.

If were talking 'good' Sega made games since after the Dreamcast days I will say that Vitua Fighter 5 was awesome. A really solid worthwhile addition to the Vitua Fighter series. The bad really does out weigh the good unfortunately. Journey into Dreams anyone?
