Contemplating Going "No Cable/Satellite" At Our House
Re: Contemplating Going "No Cable/Satellite" At Our House
Are there commercials during the Criterion films?
edit: I ask that genuinely, not sarcastically, I really don't know the answer.

I'm cable free here, too. However, because my girlfriend wanted to watch the Olympics, I did split the (internet) cable, so we get basic television. She now wants to keep it because of TBS. :/

Nope. There weren't any commercials during Downton Abbey either, and I think that only relatively recent, network television shows have commercials.
To be honest...HuluPlus is what caused us to cancel our Netflix disc subscription. Once we subscribed, I realized that - with a few exceptions - nearly every "obscure" film that we had ordered from Netflix was available for streaming on HuluPlus.

I also felt like I had better family time in the short period we didn't have TV. We would all be in the living room, with the radio on, doing something together. Board games or the like. A lot of the time we would read, or use the computer and such, or just sit around and talk. I also remember that being the only time I could hook up my games in the living room, and the only time my parents actually ever watched me/played games with me.
I'm nostalgic and slightly depressed now.

I had this debate a while back but i decided it would be better to just cut cost on other things instead like eating out, getting an alcoholic drink while eating out, or buying new games (wait for them to become available used or discounted instead). With just those few things between my wife and I its been easy to save an extra $100 or so a month and still have the convenience of cable tv. So if it makes the family happy and gives you live sports, id say just find a similar plan that suits your lifestyle.

Haven't had cable in years. It's great. Most stuff you'd really wanna watch is available for streaming through Netflix/Hulu, the channels' websites; DVD/Blu-Ray, or less legal means.

I stopped watching TV over a decade ago. Except for TV when unwinding after a day of hard convention work with an old job or some friend having the TV on, I don't watch. My TV gets used for games or discs only.

You don't. As long as you live in that market there is no work around or package you can get. Now if you wanted to move to Hawaii then you could buy a package to watch local Cleveland teams, but as long as you live in Ohio you are stuck. Pretty much the main reason I still have cable.

Re: Contemplating Going "No Cable/Satellite" At Our House
I've never paid for cable. My wife misses cable more than I do, as she's the sports nut, and enjoys the Food Network. She has found a decent replacement for the Food Network between PBS's Create subchannel and the Live Well Network, which is another digital subchannel in our area. Sports are a bit more tricky, but if you aren't picky about what you watch, there is a good amount of sports coverage over the air. For the bigger games that are only on cable, get friendly with a neighbor who has cable. It's not a perfect replacement, but being cable-free does save a considerable amount of money.
