My area isn't all that bad in comparison to other places in the US, but I keep my doors locked and there are almost daily assaults/burglaries and a handful of murders every year. Thankfully I live kind of secluded from the really really shady areas. Going out after dark in the bad areas of town is pretty much asking for it.
I live on the west side of Cleveland. Contrary to some national perceptions, it's a pretty safe area.
Granted, where I live in yuppy filled area, so the city has a vested interest to protect the neighborhood. The far East side of Cleveland is pretty bad, a couple of shootings a week now that it's summer.
Still, I love my city and feel comfortable here.

Lived in Athens for 7 years, been going around at night, never mugged or anything. Murders are rare, breaking into homes has become more common, but being a nocturnal student I make for a bad target so no problem yet.
Expecting people to think about the protests, but they aren't nearly as violent or common (there have only been 3-4 noteworthy ones in the past 2 years) as the media made them seem. They take place in like 2 squares blocks of a 4.5 million people city, and it's exclusively police vs anarchists, and it's usually the police that attacks innocent bystanders, and not the other way around.

I live in a relatively small rural area, but it seems like things are slowly getting worse. We had a woman get murdered about a mile down the road from where we live. If I had started my walk a few minutes earlier, I would have been a witness to that one. We've also had a bunch of random shootings the past few years. It does seem to be a bit safer if you aren't involved in gangs or the drug trade though. My main concern comes from working at the jail for a few years. I can't go many places where I don't run into somebody I know from there. Of course, I wasn't a dick to them, so it's usually a friendly encounter.
Truthfully, I'm more likely to get hurt by one of these aholes that think the back roads are their personal motorcycle track.
I live in South Philly, and it's not so bad. There's a crazy man on a nearby street corner who seems to hate me in particular, but I haven't had any real problems.
I live in a small seaside town that's relatively quiet. At first I came in here to post that it's not that bad, but thinking about it, I was mugged a few years back, and last year a guy across the street was stabbed to death so... yeah I guess it's not that great. Definitely not as bad as other places though. But I still don't trust anyone and I keep a low profile.
