About FF II, although the NES game is an absolute mess and practically unplayable, the GBA/PSP versions really fix the game up and make it a pretty dang solid classic JRPG. I really enjoyed my playthrough of those versions. The bizarre leveling system is still there but the game is really touched up and certainly worth a go.

14 is obviously the worst, but I haven't played it. The one that I played and enjoyed the least was 10. FF10 is a huge pain. The music was pretty cool and the combat was sort of interesting, but it wasn't as good as the rest. I thought the story and characters and voice acting were unbearable too. I didn't hate the game, but I never did finish it.
If we're counting spinoffs, Dirge of Cerberus and all the Kingdom Hearts games are...bad.

Because I feel like jumping into threads today...I present, my list of Final Fantasy games:
1. Final Fantasy VI - best combination of setting and gameplay; I absolutely love it
2. Final Fantasy V - excellent challenge and excellent gameplay
3. Final Fantasy VII - most intriguiing setting; decent gameplay
4. Final Fantasy VIII - second most intriguing setting; good story if you can decipher it
5. Final Fantasy X - best battle system
6. Final Fantasy III - invented the job system; amazing for an 8-bit RPG
7. Final Fantasy I - short, simple, and fun to play through repeatedly
8. Final Fantasy IX - good...but thoroughly derivative and generally unmemorable
9. Final Fantasy IV - some people love it, but it just did not do it for me
I have not yet completed Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy X-2, or Final Fantasy XII, but I hope to get through Final Fantasy II this summer (and thereby complete my sad little life-goal of playing through each of the first ten games inthe Final Fantasy series).

It gets harder to choose a worst when you start to really look in to each game. I find it easier to find redeeming qualities in each game. I'd say story-wise that VIII drops the ball the hardest.

I would pretty much agree with this. I will add that I really tried to give XII a chance, and I may go back, but it felt like everything I disliked about XIII. And I was not too keen on the world setting in XII.
FF:Fisher Price, I mean Mystic Quest is mind-numbingly simple, but is a good intro for younger players.

Yeah. You can also start finding all the problems that change your mind about a game you thought was great. Of course, it's fine to like a bad game

For example
FF1 - Can't revive members without a trip to the Clinic, everyone gets ugly when they Class Change
FF2 - Who needs enemies when I've got party members like these?
FF3 - very questionable dungeon design
FF4 - Story was made up as they went, no control over character growth
FF5 - Awful writing, horribly simple puzzles
FF6 - totally unbalanced once you get Edgar, Transforming is useless...
FF7 - All character development is done through sappy flashbacks, everyone is a giant stereotype. All characters are indistinguishable in battle due to the Materia system.
FF8 - Well...almost everything, but Drawing is the worst. Awesome pacing though.
FF9 - Battle system is too simple and absolutely glacial.
FF10 - makes less sense than any of the other games and that's saying something.
FF10-2 - Fanservice in spades. No overworld.
FF12 - Everyone hates Vaan
FF13 - It's the most convoluted...
FF13-2 - Never mind.

Good point with regard to Final Fantsy III's dungeon design. Now that I think about it, every dungeon in that game is more like a tunnel than a maze. I still thought that the job system was pretty awesome for an 8-bit RPG, however. It reminded me of the character customization system in Dragon Quest III, my very favorite 8-bit RPG.
You also articulated some of my complaints with regard to Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VII perfectly.
Finally, I will agree that Edgar is a beast, and there is never any reason to take him out of your party in Final Fantasy VI.
EDIT: I actually like drawing...and I thought that Triple Triad was the best mini-game in any Final Fantasy title.

FFXII is my least favorite. Followed by FFXIII and then FFX. Assuming we are not counting spin offs.

I loved FFXII.
Do you hate Vaan too?
