it could follow the fighters megamix formula and have an anthropomorphic car from Gran Turismo standing on its rear tires.

You act like Smash Bros was the first time Snake appeared in a game like this.

Nice list of unlikely characters thanks to 1UP.

I think having Monkey would be more likely than most of the ones mentioned so far.

Here's my list of likely properties for this game that haven't already been confirmed for playable characters. Not necessarily the properties I want (otherwise I'd have snuck games like Psychonauts and BG&E in there), but just the ones I'm banking on.

Forgone Conclusions
Jak & Daxter
Case For: Sony owned, stage already appearing in the game, very visible during PS2 era
Case Against: Not as relevant today as it was back then.

Ratchet & Clank
Case For: Sony owned, stage already appearing in the game, very visible from PS2 era to today
Case Against: Can't think of any good argument against this franchise.

Uncharted
Case For: Sony owned, Sony's most visible current property.
Case Against: Being regular people, it may be difficult for characters to play very uniquely. I highly doubt that they could ignore this series, though.

InFamous
Case For: Sony owned, popular property, has a set of powers that kinda demand he be in this type of game.
Case Against: None that I can think of.

Doko Demo Issho
Case For: The series that created Sony of Japan's mascot, Toro Inoue.
Case Against: Not as relevant outside of Japan, but Toro's many cameo appearances in games like Little Big Planet, White Knight Chronicles, Tales of Graces F and Street Fighter X Tekken have likely changed that.

Crash Bandicoot
Case For: Sony's original mascot series.
Case Against: Currently owned by Activision - while I'm sure Crash has the highest priority, it's possible that Activision will refuse to play ball.

Spyro
Case For: Sony's second mascot series.
Case Against: Owned by Activision. They'll have to play ball.

Metal Gear Solid
Case For: A series that's entries definied the PlayStation, PS2 and PS3. Plus Kojima seems to be quite loose with where Snake shows up, having crossed over into games like Dream Mix TV, Smash Bros Brawl, Ape Escape 3, LittleBigPlanet and many other games.
Case Against: Not owned by Sony. Needs Konami/Kojima's approval.

Final Fantasy
Case For: FF7, FFX and FFXIII have been games that defined respectively the PS1, PS2 and PS3.
Case Against: Owned by Square Enix.

Likely Candidates
Team Ico Titles
Case For: Owned by Sony, very popular and critically acclaimed games.
Case Against: Team Ico may not approve of their characters appearing in a game like this.

LittleBigPlanet
Case For: Owned by Sony, stage already in the game, very popular Sony mascot.
Case Against: ... How would a Sack Person fight? Slaps? Use the Pop-it Menu to summon items?

ModNation Racers
Case For: Owned by Sony, a property which Sony has pushed hard recently.
Case Against: Who cared about the built-in MNR characters? Everyone either built or downloaded their own!

Ape Escape
Case For: Sony owned, popularized the use of the Dual Shock during PS1 era.
Case Against: Lost a lot of relevance over the years.

Tomb Raider
case For: One of the games which, early on, defined the PS1. Remained very popular throughout PS1's lifetime.
Case Against: Not as relevant, owned by Square Enix.

Silent Hill
Case For: One of the defining horror series on the PlayStation, still remains popular.
Case Against: Owned by Konami. However, if MGS shows up, SH would be much more likely.

Resident Evil
Case For: While a multi-platform title even in the beginning, it was widely known for it's PS1 appearances.
Case Against: Owned by Capcom.

Heavenly Sword
Case For: Sony owned. Very early killer ap for PS3, helped define the system early on.
Case Against: Title has become irrelevent since.

Resistance
Case For: Sony owned, Sony's first killer ap for the PS3.
Case Against: Would have to take some creative liberties for Hale to not play too similarly to Radec. (Chimera transformation?)

Devil May Cry
Case For: Genre-defining title that got it's start on PS2 - and remained exclusive to Sony until DMC4.
case Against: Owned by Capcom.

Disgaea
Case For: Genre-re-defining title that started on the PS2 - and has remained mostly exclusive to Sony.
Case Against: Owned by Nippon Ichi.

Mega Man Legends
Case For: While multiplatform, MML was more popular for appearing on the PS1. Very large fanbase.
Case Against: Owned by Capcom, who seems uninterested in Mega Man in general.

The Dark Horses
Legend of Dragoon
Case For: Sony owned, very large fanbase.
Case Against: Sony has done almost nothing with the game - although it will be seeing a digital re-release very soon.

Wild Arms
Case For: Sony owned, still very popular in Japan, very active Western fanbase.
Case Against: Popularity outside of Japan is small, series has remained untouched since 2008.

Medievil
Case For: Sony owned, large fanbase, critically acclaimed.
Case Against: Series has been untouched since 2005.

Legacy of Kain
Case For: Raziel and Kain still remain popular, and recently cameoed in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.
Case Against: Owned by Square Enix, no new game since 2003.

Klonoa
Case For: One of the PS1's defining platformers, also appeared on the PS2. Has remained popular as a character.
Case Against: Owned by Namco. Hasn't made an appearance outside of cameos since 2002.

Tomba!
Case For: Sony owned. PS1 defining platformer.
Case Against: Despite critical acclaim, Tomba! has remained rather obscure.

I think speculating about multi-platform franchises is silly. I only mentioned Snake because he appeared in Brawl and MGS4 is still an exclusive, and Old Snake can almost be thought of as a distinct character.

You hate Smash Bros?!

Anyway, I can't too excited about this Sony game as I can't think of any Sony characters that strike me as particularly interesting. None of them have the personality of Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, etc...

You mean none of them have the nostalgia factor of those characters. Mario, Link, Kirby and Pikachu are very one dimensional characters. It's usually the supporting characters in their games that have some sort of personality - the characters themselves are not much more than blank slates.

The one time I can think of where they actually tried to give a character some personality was Metroid: Other M, and everyone shat on that game so I doubt it'll ever happen again.

Good for shits and giggles - otherwise, no. There are definitely better Smash clones out there.

Team Ico may disapprove, but can they say no to Sony?
