Alternatives to Capcom fighters on the Saturn
Re: Alternatives to Capcom fighters on the Saturn
Throwing my hat into the ring in support of Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Fighter Kids, and Golden Axe: The Duel. I own Groove On Fight, but I have never enjoyed it as much as my other fighters on the console that I own. And I may be criticized for enjoying this series, but I love World Heroes. You should look into World Heroes Perfect.

Dammit, where the hell did Kikko go, he'd get a kick out of that reply.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

I enjoyed World Heroes on SNK Classics Vol 1, although I found it a bit shallow it was fun for a while. I'll look out for World Heroes Perfect as well, another cheap one for the list!
Re: Alternatives to Capcom fighters on the Saturn
Yeah, that shallowness is actually something I like about the World Heroes games. You can sit sown in the morning, learn your character's moves, their strengths, and their weaknesses, and then go eat lunch. Come back, and have fun with your friends for the rest of the day. It is simple and easy to pickup, so it is fairly friendly to folks with little experience in the genre, but can provide for some amusing matches that even folks who have been around fighters for a while can enjoy. When I owned a Neo-Geo MVS, I would play World Heroes on a daily basis. Just wake up, run through arcade mode, and then go to work or do whatever I needed to do.
Re: Alternatives to Capcom fighters on the Saturn
Ok so I got Fighters Megamix lately. Its been a long time since I played a 3D fighter and long time since I played a VF game. It's took a while to get back into the swing of it but I think I've got the idea now. Here's some thoughts:
1. It looks great
2. The moves flow a lot better than VF2 (I've been playing with FV rules)
3. I'm still not sure how to break of the Viper's armour, I've found some FV faqs that mention the moves that will do it with a viper, but not for the VF characters
4. There seems to be a major balance issue, the VF characters seem to be seriously out gunned
5. Man there is so much to learn. This is a general complaint that I have for 3D fighters, not only the rosters huge, but each character has a massive list of moves to learn. Maybe its because they list F+P, FU+P etc etc. It pads out the list and makes it look overwhelming
6. Training Mode. Yay!
7. Side stepping. Yay!
Overall I'm pretty impressed, there are enough for a solitary player to get on with and its not a button masher, in fact careful planning is needed at this stage. Hopefully when I've mastered a character it will start to get second nature. This steep learning curve is why I've always stuck with Capcom games. I know that I can pick those up and play a decent Ryu or Chun Li since we've all been playing as those for decades now. I'm going to stick thru it though and learn. This is something I've learnt from playing Gunbird lately and its improving my game in all different genres.

Re: Alternatives to Capcom fighters on the Saturn
There are simply tons of fighters on the Saturn, and they DO tend to get overshadowed by the sheer number of Capcom fighters. For something wacky, Astra Superstars is rather fun, but I don't know that it has long-term appeal. Same for Sunsoft's Galaxy Fight.
For titles that'll really grab you...
2D:
Waku Waku 7. Can't be mentioned enough. It steps outside the box while remaining completely inside the box. Crazy shit.
KOF and Fatal Fury titles. They feel different from Capcom fighters, I know, but once you adjust you'll love them just as much. SNK knows fighters. Focus less on trying to find the "trick" combos and more on individual move timing and the combos will come. Later games will all be a little more combo happy than earlier games.
And just for fun, the Golden Axe title is actually kinda amusing, though you probably won't stick around in the long haul.
3D:
Virtua Fighter 2. Rocks balls. Well balance. Nuff said.
Fighters Megamix. Horribly unbalanced. Awesome anyway. This is not a tournament game. This is the game you sit down and do crazy shit until your fingers hurt. I think it is the best "crossover" fighter around, even better than Capcom's entries in its own way.
Last Bronx. Some find it boring. It's certainly not as flashy as Soul Whatever. What it is is a sound technical fighter. If you and a couple friends sit down with it, you might find some love in there.

I played some Asuka 120% Burning Fest the other day. The ground bounce is over the top in that game!
Re: Alternatives to Capcom fighters on the Saturn
I know it's a capcom game but I'm still going to suggest cyberbots. It really doesn't feel like your typical capcom fighter. It doesn't use the traditional six button input and you are fighting giant mechs how can you not love the game?

Hey Marurun, where you been? Long time since I've seen you on here. I'll dig out SNK Classics and give them another run, bearing this advice in mind.marurun wrote:KOF and Fatal Fury titles. I'm enjoying Fighters Megamix, and I haven't played a 3D fighter in year and years. Although as you say, its definetely more for fun than it is for serious gameplay and they sacrificed balance for fun factor. eg Janet and can fire her gun, awesome but totally cheap and far too powerful.
I do have Last Bronx, although I've not fired it up for 5 years or so. I was kind of fun, although all the graphical glitches were a bit off putting.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, keep them coming and I'll keep checking back here to fill out my collection.

Is that one worth tracking down? It's always been a curiosity of mine.Bradtemple87 wrote:I played some Asuka 120% Burning Fest the other day. The ground bounce is over the top in that game!
