Apparently I like inverted cameras.
Re: Apparently I like inverted cameras.
when i play FPS games i need to set it normally. when i'm doing a behind-the-ship type shmup (like panzer dragoon, after burner, etc) i gotta invert it. always been this way, not sure why.

It's interesting to see the split. I've played crazy amounts of joystick PC games back in the day Wing Commander, Tie Fighter, Descent, always inverted, with a joystick. When I'm playing an FPS with a mouse it's non-inverted, because it always made more sense to me that way. Now on consoles, it only makes sense to me when flying is inverted and everything else isn't.BurningDoom wrote:I'm more comfortable with inverted, as well. That's because I played a whole lot of Descent before I played other FPS, and that has flight-controls which are inverted. They can be changed, but I just played it on default controls. Because of that, it's the only way I can play FPS today.

Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

didn't read the rest of the thread but thats how I am as well. hahanoiseredux wrote:I had never thought about camera controls to the extent of what was deemed normal and what was inverted. But when setting the cameras to how I like them in No More Heroes tonight, I realized I'm only comfortable with inverted ones. Just me?

Re: Apparently I like inverted cameras.
I play consoles inverted, PC normal. It's just how I've always rolled.
Older. Not wiser.

I'm this way too. I have to do inverted. Anything else feels weird.Ziggy587 wrote:^ So how many of hours did you guys spend playing Goldeneye (N64) for? Zero?
I really don't play many FPS's anymore, but it seems to me like they use to be (almost always) inverted by default. And it seems like a lot of newer FPS's are non-inverted by default. Is this real, or is it just me?
I also hate playing FPS's with a mouse and keyboard.

I was going to post my theory about it, but someone else posted it first. I think inverted naturally makes more sense to many people because that is the way your head works. This is probably why it was implemented that way in flight / camera controls in real life applications and then naturally also into games.Bikeage wrote: Inverted controls feel natural because it mimics the movement of your head as it pushes forward to look down and pulls back to look up.
It is actually strange to call this "inverted". If the control stick is pointing upwards (as it usually is), then you would have to go out of your way to make it mechanically work otherwise. Imagine an L shaped object lying down with the vertical piece sticking up. If you push the vertical bit forward, the horizontal bit will tend to tip downward. How is this inverted?

this is probably how my brain works too. Like I said, I don't think about it, it's just how my hands react. Y'know?Ivo wrote:I was going to post my theory about it, but someone else posted it first. I'm still stuck in my ways from how PC gaming was in the 90s. It was always default to push forward to look down and pull back to look up. It feels awkward to not have the axis inverted now.
If you think about it, it is a kind of oddly natural way to perceive game controls. If you were to stand behind someone in real life you would push forward on their head to make them look down and pull back on it to make them look up.
Edit: Ha someone had beat me to posting this idea

Re: Apparently I like inverted cameras.
I always hated inverted controls but I noticed the other week that it actually seems more natural to me now.
Just started playing Sands of Time and the camera on that is backwards to my mind- moving the stick to the left rotates the camera anti clockwise around the prince, so the view actually moves to the right. Took me a while to get into that.CFFJR wrote: What fucks me up worse is turning the camera side to side. Which is to say, is left left, or is left right? Some games are different, and while I can get used to it, it screws with my head for a while.
Re: Apparently I like inverted cameras.
I need to invert the up/down controls but left/right I like regular. If I had to pick between all inverted or all regular I'd do all inverted though, because I can't get myself used to pushing up for up and down for down but I'm a little better with lefts and rights.
It's one of those things you don't notice until you get stuck with a game that has defaults opposite to your preferences. I had never given it any thought up until I bought a PS2 game with regular vertical settings, and then realized that every game I had played on the PS1 had inverted controls. It was weird knowing that I had actually been pushing up to go down and down to go up all those years and never acknowledging the fact - it makes you wonder where you picked it up in the fist place because it seems unnatural.
