Thanks everyone for all the thoughtful comments and suggestions! I will be updating this thread whenever I have the funds for more games. But untill then...

What are the SHMUPs on the PS2 that are worth playing?

US Release:

Gradius V
Raiden III
Castle Shikigami III

Castle Shikigami III wasn't released on PS2. But the first two were, as Mobile Light Force 2 and Castle Shikigami 2.

And also Gradius III & IV was a US release.

The US artwork for Ico really does the game no favours whatsoever. It's drawn like some hashed together deadline-filler for a late-nineties budget PC title.

Thanks for recommending this. It's quite fun. My SHMUPS skills aren't that good as of yet though. I'm having a hard time with the later levels even on Easy mode!
