i too am of the group that tries to keep a small list of games (3-4) that i'm "currently playing" before tackling a new game. that list covers a variety of genres and platforms so i still have some wiggle room for what i want to play depending on my current mood, available time, etc. when i do get a new game, i usually want to check it out right away so i usually play enough of it to "suss it out", and sometimes i do get pulled into it and it goes into my "currently playing" list but most of the time i can put it back on my list of games to play later. it can get a little hard sometimes to keep that list of currently playing games small and not get distracted, but in general it works for me.

According to my backlog and memory, I probably have beaten maybe around ~70% of my games out of close to 400 through the 20+ years I've been gaming. That said, it's not as good as it used to be these past few years. I can rarely approach JRPG's and it's not even the "I don't have time excuse", more like "I don't have patience" or they just don't often pull me in fast enough... I'm not sure. But I have a huge backlag of PSX RPG's I've collected over the more recent years and still need to play tons of them. It's to the point where I might play one big JRPG or two a year, I remember in late 2009 I did Xenogears, last summer I beat Terranigma and Seiken Densetsu 3 (Lise run), and just a few months ago I beat Tactics Ogre on the SNES (took 60 hours), and these experiences were definitely rewarding. I just think back to my Jr. High days when I kind of switched from the N64 to the PSX for awhile, I was knocking out 50+ hour JRPG's left and right. That never happens anymore.

I also have a bad knack of replaying some old favorites thesedays and just dropping them midway in for some reason, I have no idea why. It's happened a lot with Chrono Trigger specifically, maybe it's just not quite up there with some of my other JRPG favorites.

But overall I guess I still do a good job at beating most of my stuff. When I have the money I can get pretty compulsive and buy a lot of old games in bulks, but yeah I don't forget about them and it's good to have options somedays. But I definitely don't want to be like some people here (no offense), and play many games "just" to beat them. I'd rather let the mood hit, then hit them up and have fun.

I've become much less inclined to build up a backlog. Last year I kept a list for myself to monitor my progress and shot for a goal of beating three game a month. Since then I've sold off some of my collection I've played but haven't beaten (no regrets yet) and have been beating around four games a month this year.

My rule is: if credits roll, I've beaten it. I try to keep a good balance in what I play, only playing three games at a time and none of those are from the same genre or generation. I try to make sure to beat at least some RPGs and large 3D adventure games each year. My biggest problem genre though is racing games. I love to play them but they are so long I never manage to beat them.

I've gotten real serious about finising things over the past year.

In fact I probably won't even start something that I can't finish down the track nowadays.
