I like the Genesis's "grittier" look brought on by the sharper corners and more shallow colors, but I can openly admit that the graphics are inferior to the Super Nintendo. However, I'd like to repeat the notion that's been hinted at a little bit throughout the course of this discussion, in that from time to time, the Genesis just brings out fuller compositions due to the effort put forth by the developers.
Foremost, I'm a big fan of dark and/or gritty environments juxtaposed with loads of funky neon colors, which really stand out due to the well-used contrast of a composition. If you don't know what I'm talking about, here's a couple of examples (there are several more, but I don't feel like cluttering up this page too awfully much... these are the least subtle examples I could find):

The darkness/grittiness of the scenes contrasted with those brilliant splatterings of bizarro hues of purple, blue, orange, red, and green has always been an object of fascination for me. I will say that Super Metroid utilizes this method outstandingly well, but on the whole I'd say that the Genesis happens to have more instances of this awesome artistic sensibility. Oh, and to put it simply, if "Genesis-purple" were a crayon, I'd eat it.
