Get Mega Man X. It's very good.

That is a MUST HAVE SNES game as far as I'm concerned. Super Mario World, F-Zero, Pilotwings and Zelda III. Those are the defining SNES games for me. Three out of those four being launch titles might have something to do with it...
What's funny is that I own the other three of those, just not F-Zero...

You really must get at least the second Donkey Kong Country, but also the third if you can. It's like getting the first Sonic but not the second two!
I sort of doubt that the jump between Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 is as drastic as the jump between Sonic 1 and 2. A friend of mine has the second one, so if I really like the first one I'll borrow my friend's copy of the second one and decide whether I want to buy it. To be honest, I remember playing Donkey Kong Country at a Toys R' Us in my youth and being very impressed by the graphics and music, but finding the levels far too linear. I decided to pick up the first one obviously because it's the best starting place, but more so because I felt bad not giving the franchise a real chance. So I'm gonna play through the first one and let out a few oozin' ah's at the graphics and music and see if the gameplay's good enough to keep me coming around for more.

If the jump between DKC 1 and 2 isn't as big as between Sonic 1 and 2, it's because it's bigger. The first one is a GREAT game, but the second one shits on it. It fine-tuned the graphics, has more levels (including the Lost World with a secret ending), has better music (in my opinion) adds bonus games and more.

The third one... some people don't like. I'm not gonna lie, I don't like it as much as the second, but I still like it a LOT. It's the same kind of gameplay, so it can't be bad. It has everything the second one has and adds to it a little. There's even more secret stuff to do, and three "endings."

As far as the levels being "too linear" I really don't know what to say. They are what they are. The aren't any more/less linear than any side-scrolling Mario game. And I think saying "too" linear is a bit drastic considering every level has hidden bonus rooms, the KONG letters to find, the golden animal thingies, and so on. And like I said, the second one adds a lot more to the game (such as collecting the DK coins - 1 in every level).

Play the first one. If you like it, borrow the second one from your friend. I'll be shocked if you tell me you don't want your own copy.

Sorry if what I said about it came off as insulting with the "too linear" comment; I didn't mean to. Keep in mind I was five years old when I played it and had probably just got done with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 or something where every level has like, three branching pathways and then played this Donkey Kong Country game that all the kids were screaming about and said, "Eh, it's good but not Sonic good". That's a horrible reason to dismiss a game, but I was five... so that's exactly why I'm giving it another shot at eighteen.

As far as all the collectibles, those really don't appeal to me a whole lot; finding hidden rooms is a joy for me, but I never actively seek them out. They're just a fun thing to stumble upon. But I'll likely ignore the Kong letters and golden animals and whatnot when I play it; things like that usually mean more frustration than fun to me personally. I'll be playing it for the graphics, music, gameplay, and basic experience; me taking the time to actually collect every artifact is extremely unlikely... I've got Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, Super Metroid, and Link to the Past to play!

But yeah, I'm gonna be giving Donkey Kong Country a try and if I rate it above 7/10 I'll try out its sequel assuming that I'll be playing an 8/10.

Well, it looks like you've already made your decision, but I'll go ahead and endorse ActRaiser anyway. Of the four you mention, it is easily my favorite. It's just an absolutely beautiful game in every way.

Agreed. It's common as well, so it should pop up for cheap eventually.

Well, maybe when I get more money I'll go ahead and grab ActRaiser, Contra III: The Alien Wars, and maybe Donkey Kong Country 2 and Super Mario RPG. I'll try those out on an emulator first... I'm almost certain I'll get the former two, the latter two I'll have to spend some time with. Hell, I would've already bought those, but I went ahead and splurged to get my own Super Nintendo to play all these games on... the whole sharing with my girlfriend simply could not have worked with me at college and trying to play Chrono Trigger.

I'd like to think that at this point I have all the bare essentials for a kick-ass Super Nintendo collection. I'll pick up Contra III for certain as a great 2-player game (as not everyone will be up for a game of Secret of Mana), and then ActRaiser as I've heard nothing but unfaltering praise for it. Donkey Kong Country 2 depends on my experience with Donkey Kong Country 1, and then Super Mario RPG... well... I'm not a huge fan of Mario plotlines, so I'm not certain that playing one for hours is really my thing. Like I said, I'll save that for an emulator for now.

Fear not, for Super Mario RPG is quite unlike any Mario game you'll ever play. You probably know, but it was developed entirely by Square. Which is why we'll never see another one again, or anything else from that game that's not Mario, Peach, or Bowser. Square is seriously prick about this stuff.

You know if you like shooters, get Gradius III and Axelay, truly the best on the system.

F-Zero, is still my favorite racing series of all time, the original is still damn good too.

I love both the Castlevania and MMX series to death, you made a terrific choice.

Contra too, it's rather difficult, but the two player in just about any Contra game is one of the defining moments in any gamer's life.

ActRaiser is also another place you can't go wrong.
