You probably have to go a little outside of standard pop music to find something that would be a good fit for a shmup video collage. There's some good hard rock or metal that might work, as well as some house that might work well also. I don't listen to as much music as some people do, but I know stuff's out there.
I think music can provide great visual inspiration, I just think you maybe approached it wrong. When you work with video you have to carefully consider the match between what you see and what you hear. When I was in Japan I took a class where we had to, among other things, craft a video documenting elements of our stay there. I was lucky enough to be able to work with an Avid workstation (now, 10 years later, many PCs can do what that could do pretty easily then). I had video clips and I had to work backwards and put music to it. I didn't change the speed of anything, but I did have to use careful scene selection and music transitions. What I ultimately produced was amateurish, naturally, but I was still proud of it because it was carefully considered.
And to be frank, I bet you could still have made that video without speeding up the footage. It would just have involved much more careful selection of footage. I would like to see you have another go at it simply because I think you likely can do better.

Yeah, I'm sure some Swedish speed metal/etc could work with a lot of shooter videos. I actually hadn't seen too many Muse fan videos at all, so I'm not really into the "scene", as it were. I just happen to really dig their sound.
It was all done super newb style with VirtualDub, so I'm pretty far from a pro...but at the same time, it's easy enough for anyone just by looking at the wave file and timing the frames correctly.
