This cannot be understated. Using these sort of items intelligently makes the game's harrowing difficulty and archaic design a bit more tolerable.

I finished Uzo in about 5 minutes with a map. Finished the Amedasu, but wow. Those upper floors were plain stupid. Please tell me it does not get worse than that place.
The game shipped with a guide book, and the guide book contained maps of all the dungeons. Accordingly, there is absolutely no shame in consulting GameFAQS when you are trying to get through this game. (I played through it recently on the GBA, but I was lucky to pick up a weathered copy of the original guide book at a thrift store...I don't think I could have made it through the game without it.)

More specifically, once every character has a weapon/piece of armor that casts GiRes so you can keep healing for free. It rules.

I was dead last in the Shining Force II playthrough - didn't want that to happen again. I am slowing down now though, as the schoolwork is piling up.

Regarding dungeons, I don't know which game is worse - this one or the first one. The mazes in the original game are much more monochromatic, but can at least be drawn more easily on graph paper.

PSII is way worse.

(I don't know why I keep putting this game down. I did enjoy playing through it quite a bit, but it did so many things wrong. Deciphering the archaic design must have been part of the appeal.)

There may not be any shame in it, but with these old RPGs, I like challenging myself to see what I can come away with on my own. While it may have shipped with a walkthrough on the Genesis, there was at least one entire country that played through the game without any help other than a map of Motavia (sans islands) and a spell/equipment chart. That's baffling to me; and I won't be subjecting myself to that kind of horror. Uzo broke me, anyway, and I did pull up a map once I got to floor 6 of the Climatrol. It was still a nightmare.

I can't seem to get away from this game, though. It's frustrating to the point of making me feel like tearing my hair out, but I keep coming back to it every chance I get. Maybe I like the abuse. I don't know.

It was the same way with me...I didn't acquire the guide book until I was well past the dams, and I hated almost every aspect of the game's design. At the same time, however, I was somehow compelled to play it, and I spent hours grinding levels and wandering around the dungeons. To this day, I do not know why I as so addicted to it.

If it makes you feel better, go back to the thread. I started after you and only finished it after you guys had moved to PS2 (which I don't think I'll be playing this time - want to see if I get through Road Rash for TR though).

When I was a kid I played a lot of RPGs that were about as cryptic as PSII. I would play them on and off for years and usually never finish them. The difference is that they were WRPGs for the PC/Mac, not JRPGs.

These days I don't have the patience for that sort of thing. That's not to say I always use walkthroughs. As far as recent examples go, I got through most of Ys I without any help. I beat Eternal Sonata in its entirety with no walkthrough. But this game? I'd like to be done by 9/11/13 - not 9/11/16. I'll take whatever help I can get.

Oh, and let's check out a Phantasy Star III dungeon:

Yeah, they eased up a bit.

Exploring the Dezo towns. Weapons and armor cost a ton of money. Grinding must be done, but I'm not in the mood now. I'll resume on Monday evening.

I got Amy yesterday, did a bit of grinding to get her to level 6, and will start working on the Bio Systems Lab this evening.
