I just saw one or two posts saying they hated it
also the 'ghost' RE4 demo looks like it takes place in the castle area, you can see some remnants of it in the part where you play as Ashley briefly.

Me again being persnickety, I guess. I liked the game for what it was. It just wasn't a Resident Evil game.

I gotta say, RE3 definitely hinted a lot at the kind of direction the series would head in.

I'd say I love RE4 as much as I love RE1. Just in different ways.

Some obscure picks......
I wish the American SNES versions of Arcus Odyssey and Might and Magic II had been released. Both solid games, only available in Japan (maybe Europe for M&M?).

I haven't played the Japanese version of Arcus Odyssey, but if it doesn't have slowdown during two-player, then that would cinch it.

Sonic Spinball wasn't a Sonic game, Mega Man Battle Network wasn't a Mega Man game, Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts wasn't a Banjo game (more of a Toy Commander sequel if anything), and Conker's Bad Fur day was very different from the original concept and the GB game. These games aren't automatically bad, though. RE4, while drastically different and not as good as the earlier games, is still worth a play, and is by no means bad.

Again, I liked the game for what it was but I didn't think it was a Resident Evil game, nor was it very scary (and not really the kind of game I can get into).
But I think your argument is specious. Sonic Spinball isn't called Sonic 4, Mega Man Battle Network isn't called Mega Man 10 or whatever... Banjo is probably the closest to what Capcom did w/ RE4, and people DO complain that it isn't a Banjo game. It's just funny to me that spin-off RE games feel more like the RE formula (Survivor, Outbreak, and especially Code: Veronica, tho that last one is for a good reason - it likely would have been called RE4 if it wasn't for the contract Capcom had with Sony). I feel like RE4 is more like Zelda mixed with MGS mixed with fake-Zombies. Actually, it's very God of War-ish just with shooting. I didn't find it to be some huge innovation when it came out, so the fact that it wasn't scary, wasn't like the other RE games, and wasn't innovative made it disappointing, regardless of how objectively "good" the game was.
