There were moments in the episode where I felt a certain appreciation for him. The way he handled the Carl situation and the Lorrie scene you mentioned. You know he could have had a good thing with Andrea and still would have had a friend in Rick, and a kind of nephew in Carl. The guy just kept making things worse for himself though. He made his choice and he got what he deserved for it.

I'm digging the every dead person returns as a zombie twist... or maybe that is directly related to:

I have not read the comics and at this point I don't want to read them and cross the continuity and possibly spoil upcoming shows. I have been collecting the issues slowly when I come across them cheap so when the show is done I will read them then. That being said I am loving this show. I usually don't like zombie movies, but I like the emphasis on characters, no matter how dull or predictable they are.

you shouldn't let that keep you from reading the books. The similarities are few and far between. The show, while it does have some elements in common with the books, is dramatically different and is a whole other experience all together IMO.

I agree... but things like the recent death and who was responsible was in the book and it would have spoiled the show for me. I am good at keeping movies and comics separate, but a weekly TV show that is focused on suspense rather than action would be weakened by knowing major plot spoilers.

And again, no one at any time keeps an eye on Carl. Parents won't let their kids wander in a shopping mall, but this group has no idea where a kid is during a zombie apocalypse.
And again, it's almost always no zombies or a ton that come out of the woodwork. I guess you could get away with saying the gunshot brought them out of the woods, but all the yelling from Shane and Rick should have caught their attention as well.
At least this gives them a reason to finally leave the farm.
Overall last nights episode was better. Does anyone even bother trying to keep tabs on Carl. Two weeks ago he's wandering all over the place alone, this week after everyone is told to go board themselves up in the house, Carl pops up again out of nowhere - 'Hi dad'. Real parent of the year type material going on here.
This show really needs to hire someone to watch after continuity and/or plain common sense - after what appears to be an hour or more of trudging around the wilderness, we see a shot where Shane and Rick are within sight of the house? WTF?
And to top it off, Shane was going to kill Rick in that field within sight (and earshot) of the house? Sure, Shane was going to blame it on the escaped kid, but that makes no sense - they were nowhere near where he killed the kid, so how was that going to work out?

Yeah, I was super confused when they went to a wide shot in the field and the house was in view. I did like that Daryl saw right through Shane's story and went back to track correctly.
