Ok, so I think this is going to be my first time in any of these "not beaten" threads we've had over the years because I simply feel any game I chose and committed myself to should at least be finished to completion. But last year I came across Metro 2033 and got to a point where I could not complete the game no matter how hard I tried (stupid filters) and I'd have to restart it about 60-70% in and have to deal with getting lost in the outdoor sections and carefully conserving the limited and finite resources once again. It's an FPS for crying out loud!

With that said, I humbly submit an entry for 2017.

Rambo: The Video Game (more like Rambo: The Frustrating Mess)

To this game I say the one thing I've heard hundreds of times as I kept dying:

It's OVER!

Many of you know I just started getting into Steam late last year during their Winter Sale. So in addition to games that I really wanted that weren't available on GOG, I took a scattershot approach, looking for any and all FPS. I came across Rambo and it was on sale at 90% off for around $2, plus all the DLCs. Why not?

The question I should have asked, is WHY?!

I found out last night that this is the lowest rated Metacritic game I've ever owned/played (at 34%).

What I thought would be a cool trip through the film trilogy turned out to be an uncool mess. It's an "on-rails" FPS, meaning no freedom of movement, rather you are taken through each area killing stuff and moving on. That is something I thought was neat at first, but I was wrong. Then you move on to stealthy sections where you have Rambo's signature bow at your disposal. Nice? Nope! Finally, there are QTEs upon QTEs, something you don't see a lot of in FPS. Different? How about FRUSTRATING!

There are "perks" and upgrades you can get through completing levels and getting experience points, but every death/continue you use takes a LOT of those hard earned points away, leaving you with no leveling up or any new features. NOT COOL!

Add to that the extreme difficulty and lack of checkpoints making you do large sections of the levels over and over again. On NORMAL difficulty you get 5 "credits" per level, but seeing how missing a stealth kill or QTE is instant death, well, you see what I'm getting at. What is nice is that you can change the difficulty during a level and not have to restart the whole thing, but even on the EASIEST difficulty, the enemies will not get any easier, the challenges will not get any more lenient, and add to that the numerous clipping issues and other technical gaffes means that I will NOT be re-visiting this game, nor will I be playing the special set of missions that I got for free after the regular game has ended. I was about 5 or 6 sections away from completion, but there is no way I will be returning to this difficult and broken masterpiece of **** (as one Metacritic user eloquently put it). The reviews are right! Go visit the site and don't even waste $2 on this, let alone $20!

I never got to play it back in the day because price.

I got to play it recently because price.

I loved it.

I suck shit at it.

Flipping in between I am just not fast enough for this and I die so damn much lol. I do love it but I don't see myself ever being able to master this game to beat it. yes I should git gud but I don't think I can git gud enuff for this game. No fault to the game.

If you're playing on Gamecube you unlock additional continues as you play more and more. I think I eventually beat the game using 6 continues? Might have been 7.

Ikaruga is amazing... don't give up!

I can't get very far in Radiant Silvergun myself.

1. Test Drive 4(PS1)
2. Fear Effect (PS1)
3. Grand Theft Auto (PS1)

4. The Need For Speed (PS1)

Considering the legacy the game has, I really wanted to like the original. I had heard good reviews about the game, but I just think it is a mediocre PC style racing game.

I tried to do the tournament and that is nearly impossible. The very first race in the game, I couldn't get above 6th. It is a little disconcerting to race around the track, you see the person in front of you and you never gain any ground on him. He stays in his position and you stay in your position for 8 laps. It gets a little boring.

The cars don't exactly handle the best. They all kind of turn like shopping carts or Semi Trucks. I tried some of the other tracks and I just kept running into the wall.

Once the novelty of racing very expensive cars wore off, I got bored, frustrated and gave up.

I am interested in Need For Speed: Underground. Apparently, they rebooted the franchise and it actually has a career mode and more depth to the game. I'll try that one later, but no thank you on the first one.

I think age is hard on the racing genre. I absolutely ordered the Rush games growing up. But going back to them now and they don't hold my interest for very long. Granted, I still want unrealistically goofy racing games like that today... but yeah.

Completely agree!

The Rush games are a great example as going back to them is completely painful.

I do think the really good racing games are still playable today. Games like Gran Turismo and Mario Kart are still really good to this day and Top Gear Rally is a good hidden gem.

However, PS1 racing games can be rather difficult to play after more modern games. The cars and handling just doesn't feel the same. The 'mediocre' or even good racing games from years ago I think are not holding up as well compared to other genres.

Once you get to the GCN/PS2/XBOX Generation, those are some of your timeless racing games. Those are the ones that are still fun to play, but the early 3D games in the PS1 era are a bit more rougher around the edges.

Sega Rally and Daytona USA, being very arcade-y and not at all realistic, hold up really well.

Great Battles - Medieval

Fuck that game, man. It started off pretty entertaining and rather addicting, but the difficulty is like my ex-girlfriend's head whenever a guy offers her drugs; up and down and up and down. One mission is a walk in the park, the next is fucking D-Day. It's not even remotely worth the effort to get past some of them. I made it to Chapter 13 in the English campaign before I said fuck it.
