Yeah no-one is freaking out about THIEF, or freaked out about DmC or Tomb Raider.
See my edit, which was almost immediate.

With the exception of Duke Nukem, it sounds like you're describing sequels, not reboots.Luke wrote:* A new Super Mario bros' game? Screw that mess.
I mean you do have some outliers such as Duke Nukem Forever, but gamers are usually drooling at the idea of a new GTA.
Any time there's a new development team working on an existing franchise, I'd say that's a reboot.Wispmage wrote:With the exception of Duke Nukem, it sounds like you're describing sequels, not reboots.

Being fair, how many things couldn't be turned into a franchise with sufficient motivation?ZeroAX wrote:. The gaming industry has made us expect such artistically bankrupt entertainment, that we call new movies/games/works of art, new IPs .....it is sad though isn't it? I suppose that's one way to look at it, though I think of a reboot more in terms of how long it's been since the previous entry in the series or franchise, and how different or similar the new characters and story are.Luke wrote:Any time there's a new development team working on an existing franchise, I'd say that's a reboot.

Exactly. Longer span of time between the two games, with much more pronounced differences.Luke wrote:Like Super Mario World and Mario 64? Asking to make sure I'm understanding you correctly.
I would think it to be any retelling of the same story, but differently. For instance, Tomb Raider, or the canned FPS MegaMan game (which was gonna be awesome....just saying). I think it is when they try to re-imagine it in a different light.Wispmage wrote:I suppose that's one way to look at it, though I think of a reboot more in terms of how long it's been since the previous entry in the series or franchise, and how different or similar the new characters and story are.Luke wrote:Any time there's a new development team working on an existing franchise, I'd say that's a reboot.
