I have a couple of suggestions.

Jun: Strategy

I'm going to diverge from the obvious SRPGs or RTS by suggesting a economic simulators: Transport Tycoon Deluxe. It's one of the most important games of the genre and remains one of the best, with an addictive easy to pick-up gameplay.

TTD is availble in an improved version called OpenTTD for free. It not only adds a number of important features but also has a very good multiplayer option that can be played competitively or as a team. It's availble on PC, Mac, Iphone (!), PSX and some other platforms.

Nov: Puzzle

Lemmings and it's sequels would be a great fit. It was a very big title back in the day and wa ported to every single platform you can think of. It was very influential for puzzle games thanks to the "greater good" gameplay and I think it will hold very well.

I also support the suggestion of Maniac Mansion (Adventure or Horror related, fits in both). It's readily availble, easy to play, not very long, fun and was the entire foundation of Lucasarts. Very good choice.

Here's my thoughts on which options I'd most like to play, in top 3:

Jan: Adventure – 1. Golden Axe Warrior, 2. Neutopia, 3.Startropics
Feb: Fighter – 1. Dead or Alive 2, 2.Guilty Gear, 3. Tekken 3
Mar: RPG – Ill be honest, if we're doing WRPGs, I don't really know enough to have a preference. I'd really prefer one available on a home console though.
Apr: Sports or Racing – Racing: 1. Wave Race, 2. F Zero X, 3. Sega Rally
Sports: 1. Mario Tennis. Thats the only one I'm really interested in, sports isn't really my genre.
May: FPS – Again, not my genre, but: 1. Quake, 2. Doom, 3. Unreal Tournament
Jun: Strategy – 1. Yggdra Union, 2. Command and Conquer, 3. Ogre Battle
Jul: Runngun or beatemup – 1.Shock Troopers, 2. Guardian Heroes, 3. Megaman X (I think it should be the original if we play this. It's on SNES, VC and PSP).
Aug: Party game – 1. Parappa the Rapper, 2. Bomberman 94, 3. Space Channel 5. All of these are awesome though.
Sep: Platformer – 1. Sparkster, 2. Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck games, 3. Out of this world
Oct: Horror-related – 1. Maniac Mansion, 2. D, 3. Silent Hill
Nov: Puzzle – 1. Puzzle League, 2. Puyo Puyo, 3. Lemmings
Dec: Shmup – 1. Ikaruga, 2. R type, 3. Fantasy Zone

I didn't include pinball, as no-one seems to have made any suggestions for pinball games but me.

Since it was mentioned, I'll just say that Grandia 2 is one of my favorite rpgs, and its not necessary to play the original first, as they aren't connected.

I've beaten it 3 or 4 times already, but I also think that anyone who hasn't played it really should, so you can consider this support (as in +1) for the game.

That said, I'd still prefer a wrpg for this year. :D

Any interest in one of the Commander Keen games for adventure? It's available on DOS and gameboy color. It's also a really great bunch of games to run with dsx86 on DS.
Black DSi, Pink GBC, Softmodded Wii, Softmodded Fat Ps2, Black Gamecube, Xbox, Dreamcast, Ps1 Slim, Atomic Purple GBC, Onyx GBA SP, Gears of War 3 Edition Xbox 360 Slim, PSP 3000, NES.

Keen would be a platformer. Great suggestion though.

I'm also gonna suggest Pokemon Pinball and/or Pokemon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire. Great games.

Sonic Pinball on the GBA!
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
