Fast Computer Needed
Agree, the level of graphics don't justify the crappy coding. Looks like it could be fun if it had a decent frame rate.

Server Issue
What is the deal with the server? My son wants to be a host server which means backdooring the root server. two reasons why I am uncomfortable with this.
1. The game is Java based, will there be any Spyware Issues?
2. My Internet speed adequate but not extremely fast for a Cable Modem. With More traffic in, will that really kill my online speed on the other computers?

Not crappy coding, just a language that is very difficult to optimise for speed.

Uh, what? Why would there be spyware?

It depends if you have a lot of clients connected, and it's all to do with your upload speed. It shouldn't bog your connection down too much.

1. No. How is Java in any way related to Spyware? This isn't some random Java applet running off a strange site, it's a well known game.

2. I don't think it'll hurt your internet too much, I would assume it wouldn't be too much more than playing an online game, as I assume that the server won't be filled with a huge amount of people.

And as far as the whole Java issue, Java isn't a slow language anymore. It got that reputation when it started because it was pretty slow, but it's pretty close to or as fast as C is these days. The reason why Minecraft can run slow is because of all the stuff going on in the background, it's a sandbox game, so there's a lot for the system to deal with, even if it doesn't have the prettiest graphics. I was able to play it in the browser on some relatively old (4-5+ years) computers at the place that I work at, and they were never powerhouses, and it played fine. Not perfectly, but more than well enough to be enjoyable. Don't worry so much about specs, even if the game isn't running at full speed, you can toggle settings to get it running better, and it'll be more than playable. It's such a good game, it's worth a bit of frame loss!

[edit] I see Niode just said some of what I said, but dammit I already typed this out!

Maybe just over cautious about this, with all the stories one reads about Java issues. Especially concerned that the root modem site has to be tampered with for hosting a new server, in this case Minecraft. I recommended to my son to let the friend be the host, send all the traffic to their modem.

No.

I've programmed in Java for almost 5 years now and having learned C++ and C over the past year and a half, Java isn't even close in speed, especially with C. All the obfuscation involved with getting around pointers takes a significant amount of time to process, and platform independence, however convenient, is another reason for the slow speed. This is not to say I dislike Java, but rather to show you that the Java language is not speeding up nearly as fast as computer hardware is. If you code on a machine 3 years old in Java, then code in C, you'll definitely see a difference. The insane speed of computers today blurs that difference to where its negligible, but when you're doing something extremely intensive you want as low level as possible for efficiency, and that would be C 100% of the time.

Apologies for the rant. I AM looking at getting this game for my new rig, it looks incredibly fun. Just hope I don't get too addicted >_<

So I finally built a house, man, those were some of the most fun 3-4 hours I've ever spent.

Here's some footage: http://youtu.be/zquIDrqlNSw

Also, for the ones having framerate issues, did you guys enable the max FPS option on the "option" menu? Before that I was getting 40-20 FPS on a GTX 460, an AMD Phenom II X4 965, 8GB of DDR3 1333MHZ RAM and a 1TB HDD, now I get 400-60 FPS.

There is a new mod out there that lets you roll a Katamari through Minecraft to pick up blocks.

I watched Simon from the Yogcast try out that mod. It made his game's fps slow down a ton, but other than that it looked like fun.

I watched it on the Yogscast as well and it definitely has some bugs, but I can definitely see potential for it.
