Okay, I updated the OP to reflect your chosen games. I would highly suggest the SNES version of PoP over the NES version though. The SNES version of PoP is the very best iteration of that game, and it's very, very challenging to beat legit.
And yes, GOOD LUCK!

Air Diver Desert Strike Sword of Vermilion
I've beaten all those, they are fantastic and definitely not easy.

I always found the original TG16 iteration to be challenging. Not XTREME, just challenging.

Also, participants, please keep track of games you listed which judges deferred on. If two judges defer on any of your given games, then Ack makes the final call. Participants definitely have to help us judges keep track of which games we've judged for you. Thanks!

I forgot you'd mentioned interest in difficult yet short RPGs/SRPGs. Here's a few to consider:
The encounter rate drove me nuts in this one.
Very fun roguelike, but the RNG can be a beast. Has an English fan translation.
Very luck based, but is possible to beat quickly if the RNG god smiles upon you.
Excellent short SRPG that can be difficult based on what type of mechs you build.
This only took me about 15 hours to beat, but was absolutely challenging. Has an English fan translation.

Thanks for recommendations. I do believe I have a Fatal Labrynth copy. Could also be intrigued with actraiser 2.
I can't do original gameboy games. Brandish 2, I can't do the spinning room mechanic.

Ooh saw mentioned Desert Strike above. I love the Strike games, but have never beaten one. Battletech on the Genesis would probably qualify too, that one is tough.
