No Oomph?

The beginning was a tribute to BATMAN FOREVER*, how much more oomph could you ask for?

Plus Guy Pearce looks a little like Val Kilmer... and almost played Batman.

I'm not really sure what I mean, it might just have been my mood at the time. It just didn't seem to have punch. Like watching a movie that's really good, but is about something you don't care about, except that I care about Iron Man.

El Orfanato

Watched it based on a suggestion in another thread. More depressing than spooky really. Good production nonetheless.

Really captures the essence of a nightmare. I'm aways astounded by how much better this is than any other Amityville sequel.

Is it better than the original? That movie was terrible...

Epic

An apt title, as it turns out. It's not on the level of ParaNorman or The Croods, but as an attempt by Blue Sky to try something different, it works very well and I applaud their effort. It reminded me very much of Don Bluth, which is a plus as I'm a big fan of his. I give it a B+. The 3D was pretty good too, so if that's your thing, check it out.

This is a movie that if you are on the fence about seeing, skip it. There's nothing wrong with a kids movie being just for kids, but every parent's face I saw in my theater's audience looked bored. There's no sprinkling of humor for grown-ups, and the story isn't anything new. For $15.00 a ticket, I expect a bit more especially for a movie whose title suggests it will be remembered forever, and even poems will be written about it.

The 3-D is impressive though and it's fun.

BEFORE MIDNIGHT

Before Midnight is an incredible emotional roller coaster of a movie. I thought FANCES HA was the movie that kept my face glued to the screen the most this year, but BEFORE MIDNIGHT was even more intriguing and original. Oscar worthy stuff. Julie Delpy is a stand out and deserves a nod from the academy.

Word of advice: Bring kleenex. Not for the nudie scenes, for the reason that this movie will break your heart. That's not a spoiler as it's a drama, and it does drama incredibly well.

Your mileage may vary on this one. I'm a huge fan of animated films, so of course I liked it. My mom is only sometimes interested in animation (for example, she had no interest in seeing Wreck It Ralph or ParaNorman but she loved Brave and Despicable Me) and she enjoyed Epic just as much as I did. The plotting and characters (especially the villain) are very much like the kind of thing you might have seen in an animated film from the 90s. That might not be so impressive to some people, but for others, it might be just what they're looking for.

Animated films may be my favorite genre of film, and when I compare epic to others, it falls flat. If I'm going to tell someone to spend nearly $20usd and two hours of their time on a movie it's got to be better than epic. I have no qualms in saying that UP was fantastic and worth every penny, SHREK is timeless, WRECK IT RALPH was good, and EPIC was so-so. It's just not a movie I feel comfortable telling people to see.

On the other hand, I'd tell people to rush to see BEFORE MIDNIGHT.
