That's why it took me 3 or 4 tries over as many years to finally get through Demon and Dark, and even then it was just because I finally used a guide. I'd never fault anyone for using a guide to get through one, even on their first playthrough. They're just totally not my cup of tea in that regard, despite the cool combat and wonderful world/creature design they have

My biggest problem with the Demon's and Souls-like games (with the exception of DS3, since it apparently fixes this) seems to be most of the stuff you like about it. That really unforgiving NES-level difficulty where if you don't know what's coming you're almost definitely gonna die. How your first character almost definitely won't win you the game. For a NES game that can be beaten in a couple hours if that, that's not such an awful thing. For a 7th-gen RPG that's gonna take you like 20+ hours at least on your first runthough, that's a HUGE fault to me. That your first runthough can die half-way through once you realize your character is terrible, forcing a restart (more or less): That's a game that really doesn't respect the player's time in any way.

I'd say that your first character likely won't be sufficient isn't particularly accurate. They can be beaten without leveling at all. Leveling up doesn't so much make beating the games possible as much as it makes it easier - though I'd be the first to say that relatively few would be inclined to do SL1, or find it fun.PartridgeSenpai wrote:My biggest problem with the Demon's and Souls-like games (with the exception of DS3, since it apparently fixes this) seems to be most of the stuff you like about it. I would agree that there can be more effective builds, particularly for certain fights, so it's quite possible to have yourself spec'ed in such a way that some of them wind up much harder...though I've yet to find things to get entirely unworkable. I haven't really done NG+ much though, or done something like put points into Resistance.
DS2 and 3 do allow respec'ing, albeit a limited of times per NG cycle, so yeah, if that's an issue for you, then those do address it. Hard to really go wrong with simply pumping up HP/Stamina (and Adaptability in DS2) early though.

Kudos to you for sticking with it, regardless of using a guide.PartridgeSenpai wrote:That's why it took me 3 or 4 tries over as many years to finally get through Demon and Dark, and even then it was just because I finally used a guide.

Guides or other resources can really vary too. Souls games tend to be far more involved than simply having the right stat or item to get through. You have to execute decently well, or you will get dead. They're not impossibly difficult, but they will not stand for players not learning the basics. So, looking up what something is weak to, or a viable strategy, is still only a small part of it.
Plus, they're structured in a way that encourages helping other players - leaving notes, or straight up co-op. Not to the degree that MMOs can be, but, it is an inherent part of the design.
It's a bit different than looking up the solution to a puzzle in an adventure game, where figuring out what items to combine or whatnot is literally the entire point.

Since I'm playing offline single player... I'm in for a good time.isiolia wrote:Plus, they're structured in a way that encourages helping other players - leaving notes, or straight up co-op. Not to the degree that MMOs can be, but, it is an inherent part of the design.
Yeah that's true for adventure game guides. But typical JRPG guides can be just as ruinous. A lot of folks use them to pick the best party members, find the best gear, level up the choicest skills, collect the most important items, use the most effective techniques against a boss, have zero chance of missing optional content, etc. Using a strategy guide like that sucks all the challenge and fun out of a JRPG in my personal opinion.isiolia wrote:It's a bit different than looking up the solution to a puzzle in an adventure game, where figuring out what items to combine or whatnot is literally the entire point.

Installed and then have been so busy, I haven't had a chance to test and see if it works. I've had a busy couple of months, and this traffic issue isn't helping anything.

Yeah I was delayed by the I-85 shenanigans two weeks ago when traveling to Sweetwater Creek state park. You have my sympathies.

Maybe you guys shouldn't play video games while driving.
