Ray Halbriter has been taken to court for bulldozing the houses of his political foes. If you are an Onieda Indian and marry a non native, your spouse and children are considered illegitimate and will be kicked off the reservation if the spouse dies. Ray Halbriter taking the high ground is a bit like Jose Canseco being the voice against steroids. He might have a point but when it comes from him, grab your wallet and bring your lawyers.

A majority rules mindset allows for persecution and real oppression.
In this context where the name is borderline, I'd like to think majority rules applies. Maybe they could hold a poll and see if a majority of N.A tribes want it changed. That makes more sense than some preemptive move that would cost tons of money.

Oxymoron, you have an insanely simplistic view of things.

Redskin for Native Amercans is akin to calling a black guy n*****, so of course.. They should go the Bullets route and call them the Magicians.. Yeah I stole that one..

1. People find name offensive
2. Hold formal poll to see if majority of people agree
3. Depending on result and the NFL's stance, change or do not change the name

This is a outline and of course there are going to be a many kinks along the way but I think that'll be a effective method to resolve this problem. Please tell me what falls through the cracks for you.

I'd also like to point out that the Cleveland Indians logo is not the most politically correct either, but considering Native Americans make up for less than 1% of the overall U.S population, I doubt it will ever change..

I think the severity and impact is what sets the context. Part of the argument is that naming a team isn't all that harmful and the other is that some embrace it.

Things like enslavement, gender and racial voting rights etc are no brainer minority protections. Not all women were pro women's suffrage, yet a group of the population lacked rights others had, so they were protected.

There is no feasible way to do a poll that would be very representative.

Between steps 2 and 3, you seem to be making the incorrect assumption that the NFL or the Redskins team owner would give a flying fuck about the poll results.

No, calling a native american a redskin is like calling a 'black guy' black, or blackskin which is what black is referring to...

I will agree that it isn't very PC. But the connotations on those 2 names or slurs aren't near the same.
